Some searches here revealed this post

(edited: I didn't realize using "list" would make the post so lengthy. I replaced the "list"
with "code" to reduce the screen length unless someone wants to look at the quite lengthy
screen paste)

I don't think my system is fouled up the same way as that poster, but nonetheless, it is
not functioning correctly, likely is something I fat-fingered or click the wrong install button
somewhere. I've been using various flavors of Linux for about a year and half for my desktop
as well as some servers on my home office network.

I tried to install Y-PPA-Manager with the following sequence:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager
[sudo] password for jim:
You are about to add the following PPA to your system:
 Y PPA Manager
 Y PPA Manager

Info and feedback: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/y-ppa-manager-easily-search-add-remove.html

This PPA is for Y PPA Manager and also includes the latest YAD for Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and Natty (YAD is a dependency for Y PPA Manager): http://code.google.com/p/yad/

 More info: https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/y-ppa-manager
Press [ENTER] to continue or ctrl-c to cancel adding it

Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.sFB59azwBh --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80/ --recv 7B2C3B0889BF5709A105D03AC2518248EEA14886
gpg: requesting key EEA14886 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key EEA14886: public key "Launchpad VLC" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)
That seem to go ok, then I did:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get update
which resulted in a lot of
ign (assuming that means ignored):
hit (assuming that was success)
Get (assuming also successful)
Err ( can't be a good thing but how to fix it?)
W: GPG error: (not good)
W: Failed to fetch: (also not good)
E: Some index files failed to download (possibly ok in most circumstances)

I need some enlightenment or education, or just plain sympathetic tutoring.

Below is a detailed list of my "sudo apt-get update" results

I following foolishly, maybe with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install y-ppa-manager
which resulted in :

Code: Select all

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

My guess is that my ppa source list is fouled up, but I don't see a way to fix it.

Any ideas?

I'm moving this topic here as you are not running Linux Mint 12, but Ubuntu 11.10.

The solution for the GPG error about the missing public key is given here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2042929

In your /etc/apt/sources.list file you have the line:

Code: Select all

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free
I don't think you need that; this is the Chrome repository and that is covered also by the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list file. So remove that line from /etc/apt/sources.list.

The /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dockbar-main-ppa-oneiric.list file refers to the Oneiric release for Ubuntu, but this repository doesn't have files for that Ubuntu release (see http://ppa.launchpad.net/dockbar-main/ppa/ubuntu/dists/). Suggest you find an alternative PPA for this and remove this one?

The /etc/apt/sources.list.d/webupd8team-y-ppa-manager-lisa.list file refers to a "lisa" release for Ubuntu. That is of course not possbile. lisa is a Linux Mint release name; that should be "oneiric" for Ubuntu. Replace lisa with oneiric in this file to fix that.

Sounds like I have a mishmash of the two systems installed. How in the world did I manage to do that?

My bootup screen shows a Mint12 login screen, and I have a lot of mint programs installed.

Hmmmm I was wondering why I have so little success at modifying my main menu. Maybe this is the "root" of all my problems.

Presumably you intend for me to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list, right? After edited that file, if I issue the ixni command, my output will change?

So I suppose I need to backup everything I have a do a new install to get on the right foot.

Therein lies the problem, I unfortunately don't know where to find everything I need to archive to put it back when the new system is installed.

If I just archive the home directory, I'll be including a LOT of things that are unnecessary and/or redundant and/or the wrong thing to keep.

What I do not want to lose are my tomboy notes (where ever they might be), my config files for various programs that I've tweaked, etc.

I really would like to put Linux Mint 13 on and upgrade. If I could just feel secure about not losing any of my data.

Any good links for the correct directories to archive for future restoration?

Thanks in Advance.

BTW, I did menu>system tools>system settings>System Info and sure enough, it came up with Ubuntu 11.10 I'm at a loss to explain why all the boot-up it looks like Mint 12.

It may look like Linux Mint 12 (however that happened), but when you have none of the Linux Mint repositories in your sources.list file then you are surely not running Linux Mint :)

Upgrading to Linux Mint 13 sounds like a good idea, and perhaps be a little more careful with all the added repositories (do you really need them all).

I don't use Tomboy, but I would hope it has a backup or export function? As to what directories you should back up for the other programs, that depends from program to program. Press Ctrl+H in your file manager to see the hidden files and directories in your home folder, but I think that indeed copying a large set from here will do more harm than good. I'd instead look at for which programs do you in fact care about its settings and preferences and such, and look for a backup or export option.

Thanks, Vincent for all your sage comments. I'm delving deeper into the "nuts and bolts" of Linux file storage and doing a much better job of learning the "standard" Linux file storage. In the future, before I commit important data to any piece of software, I definitely intend to thoroughly research how to make a backup AND a restore. It is amazing how many people latch onto a backup "solution" that they don't ever test to find out how to recover their data.

I marked this "resolved" instead of "solved" because I'm a long way from the solution, but at least I have a map to get me there.

Thanks again, and best regards to you and yours.
