No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Hi,
My previous thread got too muddled after I kept updating it, so here is my story in short:
I used to have LMDE running with all previously available updates. Now, after applying UP5, I am stuck in terminal mode.
startx [program]
will give me some basic functionality, but I am getting increasingly desperate that my PC has become almost unusable. I was meant to do some urgent work over the weekend.
Any kind advice would be much appreciated.

have you looked in your Xorg.0.log to see what it says? sudo nano /var/logs/Xorg.0.log that should be the latest log file from the last boot.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Many thanks for coming back to me.
Is this the right path? I get an empty file there.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
the look at some of the other log files to see when your xorg crashes, ther is usually a xorg.errors.log or something like that if it's having issues, that should be in the same path or under /etc/X11/, this is a short clip of what my Xorg.0.log looks like:
so check, boot kernel, messages and syslog, not all have the .log but they all should be in the same place and readable by nano.
Hope that helps

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
No, because /var/logs does not exist in Linux. It should be /var/log.Zweitaktmotor wrote:Is this the right path?
Also, it's more convenient to use a viewer (less) than an editor (nano) if you just need to look at some log.
Code: Select all
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Please elaborate. What does "basic functionality" mean here? What does work and what doesn't? Are any error messages shown in the console?Zweitaktmotor wrote:startx [program]

And, of course (this should've been in your first post) - what is your video card?
You can run
Code: Select all
inxi -G

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Hi Monsta,
Many thanks for taking the time to help.
To answer your questions:
1. For instance, if I type
startx libreoffice
It will start LIbreOffice, but as a single instance in low (640x480 ?) resolution. No task bar, no menu, no multitasking. As soon as I stop the program, I am back at the terminal prompt.
I can do the same with Firefox and probably a lot of other programs, but I do not seem to have a network connection. (I am sending this post from another, very low spec machine running TinyCore Linux)
2. My LMDE PC is an Asus eeePC 900. Your inxi command gives me:
Graphics: Card Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller X.org 2) Res: 128x37 Gfx Data: N/A out of X
3. The Xorg.0.log file is rather large. I tried to scan through to see any irregularities, but found nothing significant. It loads the graphics, then the all input devices. At the end of the log (probably recording shutdown?) it says several modules such as Power Button, Video Bus, Keyboard etc were unloaded then "server terminated successfully (0). closing log file."
4. Please see my other post at:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=114067
It could be that the problem is not graphics but a drive mounting as RO. But then the Xorg.0.log file is dated today so write access must be there...
***
I have been tinkering around for three days now and am starting to resign to the fact that the installation is buggered. The bottom line is that I may have to wait until the new ISO is out and do a re-install. I have a backup of my complete home directory including hidden files, but unfortunately not of the full installation before the upgrade. I had quite a bit of extra software installed, but have not kept a record. So it will take me some considerable time to get back to where I was.
Perhaps it would be a good idea if these upgrades came with a full roll-back feature, even at the expense of extra disk space. What I initially liked about LMDE was that it is meant to be a rolling edition. With the main, Ubuntu-based editions, I used to alternate between two partitions in case anything went wrong with a new version. But with LMDE, I abandoned this approach and am now struggling with the consequences.
Many thanks again anyway.

Running a single program won't help much. You should try to start the display manager instead.Zweitaktmotor wrote:1. For instance, if I type

First, run
Code: Select all
cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
Second, start the DM by running
Code: Select all
service <your_dm_name> start
Good: this is not nVidia or ATI (the usual suspects when it comes to Xorg breakages).Zweitaktmotor wrote:Graphics: Card Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller X.org 2) Res: 128x37 Gfx Data: N/A out of X
Bad: now we have to look elsewhere to find out why Xorg broke.
Ugly: it should say "X.Org 1.12.0" or something like that, not that weird stuff (see the part I've made bold).
It's been terminated successfully because you only ran a single program. This log isn't useful right now, you need to run the display manager (see above).Zweitaktmotor wrote:"server terminated successfully (0). closing log file."
After that, look into this log once more.
Looked at it. Seems like a broken system... well, maybe it can be fixed, but this -Zweitaktmotor wrote:4. Please see my other post at:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=114067
- could be bad. Please double-check it. Try to ping some known website, for example, linuxmint.com. Try to perform apt-get update and see if it completes normally.Problem is: I don't even think I have a proper network connection
Do you keep your home directory on a separate partition?Zweitaktmotor wrote:I have a backup of my complete home directory including hidden files, but unfortunately not of the full installation before the upgrade.
Not a "true" rolling edition. Just an edition that you don't have to reinstall every six months.Zweitaktmotor wrote:What I initially liked about LMDE was that it is meant to be a rolling edition.
More info about what's rolling and what's not can be found in this LMDE FAQ.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
OK I have to go back in history here:
I had this LMDE installation right from the start and kept applying all the updates. When the previous update came out earlier this year, I ran into a bit of a problem:
I think the update installed Gnome 3 while the 042012 ISO contained Mate/Cinnamon. I did not like the new screen setup and installed Mate later by hand, using Package Manager.
Following your advice, I found out that my DM is called gdm3 (still Gnome3 ?!).
I tried to start it as advised but got:
"Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm3 Usage update-gconf-defaults [options]
error: Source directory does not exist."
Tried the same with "mate" but got "unrecognised service" (What might it be called?)
***
To answer your other questions:
No, I do use my standard home directory, but only for program generated files (settings, caches etc.). My actual user files are kept on an SD card which I remove from the machine during maintenance. I use a program called Conduit to make regular backups of both the home and the SD card.
Besides, I can still boot using the 042012 DVD and access my installed file system from there. Probably have to learn a bit more where Linux stores things in order to rebuild the system.
Confirmed, no network at the moment, but I could download things elsewhere if necessary.

Can you post the output of
I ask because LMDE updates don't add more desktop environments, and there is no version of LMDE that comes with Gnome 3 built in.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Something is very badly broken...Zweitaktmotor wrote:"Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm3 Usage update-gconf-defaults [options]

That might be called "don't try to apply something you've just learned to everything you see or remember".Zweitaktmotor wrote:Tried the same with "mate" but got "unrecognised service" (What might it be called?)
MATE is not a service or a daemon, it's a desktop environment. Its session can't be started like this, it's started by a display manager.
Well, that doesn't really answer the question. You can run mount (without any parameters) to see if you have any partition mounted on /home.Zweitaktmotor wrote:No, I do use my standard home directory, but only for program generated files (settings, caches etc.).
That's not the point... Your system's current state may indicate that the upgrade to UP5 wasn't complete. The first thing to do if you suspect that is to perform apt-get update, then apt-get dist-upgrade and see if it reports any errors (and suggestions for fixing them!).Zweitaktmotor wrote:Confirmed, no network at the moment, but I could download things elsewhere if necessary.
There's not much to do without the network.
If you're lucky, the error that prevented the upgrade from completing happened after everything has been downloaded, but before every package could be unpacked and configured. You can try running
Code: Select all
dpkg --configure -a
Code: Select all
dpkg-reconfigure <package_name>

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Hi Cpt. Midnight
cat /etc/issue
gives me:
Linux Mint Debian Edition \n \1
***
Yes, I found this rather odd. Every one was talking about Cinnamon and Mate, but my login screen only gave me the choice between "Gnome Classic" (which was not classic at all) and another option (which I forgot what it said, but it was something with Gnome as well). The screen layout was dark blue with a status bar at the top but no extra tray icons. On the top right corner there was a scroll-down menu for shutdown, logoff etc. One of the two options also had a feature showing small versions of all open windows.
Only after installing Mate separately I was able to use the familiar Gnome experience again.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Hi Monsta,
Sorry for sounding like a newbie sometimes.
No I did not mount any partition on home, always used the standard installation and only have one partition on my HD.
During the UP5 upgrade, I saw the machine download _all_ packages in the queue. There are no space issues either, I still have 5 GB left now.
After the download, I left the machine to process the packages and came back later to find everything finished. It may also be worth mentioning that I made sure all other programs were shut down during the upgrade to avoid any conflicts. I tried a few things (clawsmail, firefox I think) and the system seemed to run normal.
But (and here is the newbie bit again) I thought some changes might only come into effect after a reboot. This is where things went wrong, I never saw the GUI again.
I tried your suggestion dpkg --reconfigure -a but got "unknown option --reconfigure", so I guessed you meant dpkg-reconfigure -a instead. Something is happening now: blinking cursor and drive light flickering. It may take some time, but I'll let you know the outcome.
Many thanks again.

This is an old story, and this is completely alright. See this thread and this announcement.Zweitaktmotor wrote:Yes, I found this rather odd. Then reinstalling the system will just erase any configuration files and whatever you have in your home dir... so you'll have to copy them back later (you said you have a backup, that's good).Zweitaktmotor wrote:No I did not mount any partition on home, always used the standard installation and only have one partition on my HD.
BTW, the update pack info recommends installing some packages after that.Zweitaktmotor wrote:During the UP5 upgrade, I saw the machine download _all_ packages in the queue.
I see... So the update process itself seemed like it went alright.Zweitaktmotor wrote:But (and here is the newbie bit again) I thought some changes might only come into effect after a reboot. This is where things went wrong, I never saw the GUI again.
Ahh... I always confuse themZweitaktmotor wrote:I tried your suggestion dpkg --reconfigure -a but got "unknown option --reconfigure", so I guessed you meant dpkg-reconfigure -a instead. Something is happening now: blinking cursor and drive light flickering. It may take some time, but I'll let you know the outcome.
The dpkg option is really --configure, not --reconfigure. I'll edit that post so no one gets confused
The command you ran (dpkg-reconfigure -a) will reconfigure all the installed packages, that may take a lot of time (and a few questions from the system). That's why I've mentioned running dpkg-reconfigure only with a single package that has some problems (e.g. gdm3).

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
dpkg-reconfigure -a
took a long time and did not give me any output or change in behaviour.
dpkg --configure -a
gave me:
a long list of output and then at the bottom
"Errors were encountered while processing:
gvfs-backends
gnome-control-center
gnome-sushi
gnome-shell
libgnome-desktop-3-2
eog
gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-panel
gdm3
nautilus
nautilus-sendto"
I tried
dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
and a few others, but always get "is broken or not fully installed."
Is there any way to re-install them from a local source rather than the network?

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Had exactly the same experience when applying UP4 a while back. Tried everything suggested by others. Nothing worked then. It is like deja vu all over again. Something is wrong with these updates, at least to the extent they cause breakages. Got burned last time, little wiser now. I am playing around with this in a virtual machine. It is not working just like you had described. Anyways, I no longer run LMDE-XFCE on any of my computers.Zweitaktmotor wrote:dpkg-reconfigure -a

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Can you post the full output please? It could give a hint about what to do to fix what's broken.Zweitaktmotor wrote:dpkg --configure -a

If it's really long, wrap it in the "code" tag.

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?
Seems like the upgrade is incomplete after all. Well, since you're using MATE, we need to fix only gdm3 so you can get into MATE session and get access to the network.
From your other thread I see you've already stumbled upon this:
This package got broken somehow and couldn't be installed/upgraded, but that's not the full output (yes, again; posting only the bottom part of the error message may leave people guessing what really happened, as you see )
So please runonce again and post its full output here.
Code: Select all

So please run
Code: Select all
apt-get -f install
