Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon Crashing when playing 720p on YouTube

Post by OpenSourceFreak »

Hi,

Linux Mint is freezing when i play 720p or 1080p videos on YouTube.
The only thing i can do when it's crashing is pressing the reset button on my pc.
The freeze is playing after approximately 2 minutes.
It also happens on other video sites, like Vimeo or DailyMotion.
I'm running Mozilla Firefox, but on Google Chrome it also happens (tried it). Had this problem also on Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon x64.
Now i have Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon x64 and the problem still exists. Also tried installing ubuntu 12.10, problem happened also.
When i play on 240p, 360p and 480p, It works fine. I can play videos on 240p, 360p and 480p for hours without a single problem or crash.
This is a fresh installation of Linux Mint 14. It's not an upgrade. I removed all partions before installing Mint Cinnamon 14.
I also tried with x86 Linux Mint, the same problem happens. (i can't use x86 Linux because i have a 64 bit CPU and 4GB of RAM).
With a x86 version not a my RAM is recognized.

Linux information:
Linux Version: Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon x64 'Nadia'.
Firefox Version: 17.0
Flash Version: 11.2 r202
Kernel Version: 3.5.0-17-generic (x86_64).

On other websites my pc doesn't freeze.

Computer:
Motherboard: Asus P5K-E, BIOS version AMI rev. 1305
RAM: 4GB Kingston ValueRam DDR2 (4 x 1GB DDR2, 800mhz)
CPU: Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad LGA775
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 8800gt

PSU: Antec Neopower HE500

Other hardware:
Monitor: Philips 220CW8 (22 inch Widescreen)
Mouse and Keyboard: Logitech MX3200
Printer: Epson Stylus DX3850

Reinstalling Linux Mint did not help.

Firefox plugins:
- Totem 3.4.3
- Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202
- IcedTea-Web Plugin 1.3
- Cinnamon Integration
- DivX web player 1.4
- Totem QuickTime 3.4.3

Firefox Extensions:
- Adblock Plus 2.2.1
- Adblock Plus Popup Addon 0.5
- Flashblock 1.5.15.1

Hope anyone can help me.

Thanks in advance,

Could you please check if the problem happens with Opera browser? Opera is the only browser in wich I can watch movies if not turning them in to fullscreen. If I do that flash will crash (resol. independent).

Hi,

I tried with Opera (Version 12.11), crash after 2 minutes. PC freezed and i needed to restart with the reset button.
Happens also when not going fullscreen. With the moonlight plugin (silverlight) no crashes. Seems to be only flash related.
I already have the latest flash version for linux (since Adobe stopped support for linux unfortunately).
Could it be that the problem is hardware related?

Thanks in advance,

Please share the output of the following command run on the terminal. You can copy text to/from the terminal, see its Edit menu.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
As to this only happening with flash, are you using the flash that is installed by default on Linux Mint or have you installed another version? It is known that newer versions of flash have various such bugs, and that is why Linux Mint picks a version of flash that is known to be stable for most users.

After running this steps, https://sites.google.com/site/tipsandtr ... h-solution, problem is still there, even after restarting my computer.
Actually it helped a little bit. the problem is less common, but is still there, unfortunately.
Had a crash again. 15 minutes ago it worked for 10 minutes. Now i freezes again when i play YouTube video on 720p or 1080p.

[EDIT]:

Problem seems to be resolved for me! :) I share this, it might help you also. (Read a lot on the internet about this problem).
(maybe you need to run the steps in the link first, https://sites.google.com/site/tipsandtr ... h-solution).
I completely reinstalled the flash plugin using Synaptic Package Manager.
I reinstalled the following packages:
- Metapackage for Adobe Flash plugin
- Adobe Flash plugin 11
Open up Synaptic Package Manager. (Open a terminal, enter 'sudo synaptic', press enter and insert your password).
You can also open the 'start menu' and seach (via the search box) on 'Synaptic'. I think it might also work for Linux Mint 13. (I have Mint 14).
When it opens up, Search for 'Metapackage for Adobe Flash Plugin' and for 'Adobe Flash Plugin'. Rightclick on the packages. Then click on 'Mark for Complete Removal'.
Click the 'Apply' button. Enter your password if needed. You will notice that the packages are being removed.
Restart your computer. Install the above packages (Search for them, right click and mark for installation). Click Apply (You will now notice the packages are being installed).
If it is done, restart your computer aswell. Then you are done. Fixed it for me, hope it works for you too :)

Didn't work for me I'm afraid :(

Started off OK with watching a 10 minute video in 720p but then the next video crashed my computer :(
