<SOLVED> How do I stop usb mem stick from opening with desktop?

If you're referring to a live image on a USB drive then you can't, that's how it's designed. You would have to remaster the .iso

When grub boots from my hd into lm14 mate, the desktop comes up fine, but it also opens (executes) a memory stick that I keep in a usb port, which I delete before using my computer. All of my previous Mint distros never did this. I can find no fix in Control Center, startup applications or desktop settings.

In Mint 14 mate - Try going to:
Control Center > File Management > Media
uncheck "Browse media when inserted"
