[SOLVED] No audio in Windows 7, audio in Linux Mint

Post by inyriljace »

I've been using Linux for a couple of years now but have never encountered any problems with it before and I do not understand a lot of the technical jargon. This is my problem:

I have an eMachines laptop with a Linux Mint 10 / Windows 7 dual boot. Windows 7 came with the laptop. I installed Linux on it straight away and never used Windows on it. However, I've recently started using Windows for simple things like putting songs on my i-pod. Yet Windows tells me that I don't have an audio device installed so I can't hear any of the songs if I play them.
When I log into Linux, the audio is fine! Not a problem! Yet I can't get it to work in Windows. I don't know if this has been a problem from the start or if it's only recent. Is this a common problem with Linux? I've looked elsewhere and can't find anything on this topic. Some help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck as to what to do! Thanks.

A bit more system information:
Linux Mint 10 Julia, 64 bit
Microsoft Windows 7, 64 bit
eMachines E727

Edit: I tried uninstalling the Realtek High Definition Audio codec on Windows and installing a new one, but Windows said the installation failed. Audio still works fine in Linux but not at all in Windows.

Hi inyriljace,

First of all Linux has nothing to do with Windows Audio so it's not a problem with Linux. sounds to me as if the Windows driver for you sound card is not installed or has been corrupted. if you can still find the original disks that should have come with the Machine or the ones you were suppose to make when you first booted the machine the driver for the sound card should be on one of those. simply try reinstalling the driver first. If you do not have the disks , you can try going to control center add new hardware and see if it will offer to download a driver for you.
good luck.

Thanks, I've tried installing new drivers and it fails each time. As for disks, the machine did not come with any. I thought that this was probably more of a Windows problem rather than Linux, but I was wondering if any other users had experienced similar problems after installing Linux on their computers. I've tried everything that Windows tells you to do to fix the problem and it doesn't work. I feel like something may have corrupted Windows when I installed Linux. Is that possible?

hi again,

It's very unlikely that windows would be corrupted by linux if you did not overwrite any windows partitions.
if you had overwritten the windows partition windows would not boot at all. This is a windows problem almost 100% sure of that.

Why don't you give us some more information what sound card does that machine have for starters.

you say you've tried to reinstall the drivers what did you actually do?

if you do not know the sound card go to mint and in a terminal type the following and list the output here:

Code: Select all

lspci
l being a lower case L not #1

Sorry for the slow reply, but it seems the problem has fixed itself. I don't know what happened or how it happened but a few weeks ago I logged in to Windows and the audio worked perfectly, as if there had never been a problem.

I had tried downloading and installing the Realtek Audio Driver several times but it never worked. I don't know if the computer just needed a bit of time to catch up or whatever, but the problem is completely solved now. I have no issues with audio now, even though I don't know how it fixed itself.

Thanks for all your help!
