Dual booting 14 and Windows 7; Computer boots straight to W7

Post by tanikaze »

I tried running the Linux Mint demo and then choosing to install alongside Windows 7. I had around 70GB of totally free(unassigned) space available on my singular hard drive. I was installing from a USB drive. I had no errors when installing and everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot I just go straight into Windows 7. I've been looking around in my bios for any other options, anything I can do to change how it boots, and I can't find anything. I don't even know where to start on fixing this other than trying to reinstall, which I did after deleting all of the non-Windows partitions using fdisk from within the Mint demo. I tried manually creating all the partitions with 600MB for boot and 6000MB for swap(I have 6gb of ram) and I have the same issue. No sign of Grub, it just boots right into Windows. Any ideas?

Hello tanikaze and welcome to Linux Mint,

There is a problem with the grub install on some machines but it's usually easily fixed I would go to this page and down load and run
boot-repair and see if that would fix the problem first.

Good luck

I had the same problem with Win7 and ubuntu alongside it on the same partition
I installed Ubuntu but when booted no sign of grub
I solved it by downloading easybcd when in win7 and running it.
Easybcd allows you to install several boot loaders but more importantly it has a section for linux boots
it even has its own copy of grub but I have not used it. If linux is found on the partitions it tells you it has found it and allows you to give it a friendly name
it is free so worth a go. you can set the default to win7 or linux on a timer
when you choose to boot linux it then loads grub as normal
