Speaking as someone who only switched to Mint+Cinnamon, after sticking with Lubuntu for quite some time...
I wonder if there is a way of enhancing the existing (Ctrl+Win+arrow key) functionality, so that it cycles through a greater range of possible size/position combinations... Something not unlike this:

I ended up installing pywo (see above). Works quite well; I assume that it should also be the case with quicktile, as both seem to be pretty much just Python interfaces to X. Only concern left is finding a set of key combinations that doesn't collide with anything else.
Still think it would be great for this kind of functionality to be built in as part of the OS.
