No sound on M5A88-M motherboard

Post by penguin1634 »

Hey everyone,

This is my first post here, and my first time running Linux Mint (I have some experience using linux before). I have a desktop with an M5A88-M motherboard from Asus, and everything works fine except for the wee little problem with the sound. There is none, only a hissing when the volume is turned up. It detects analog stereo and HDMI audio outputs, but no sound.

Here is the sudo lspci -v output:

Hi

You seem to have onboard audio and also a nvidea audio output. Which are you using? Also which version of MInt are you using?

Hi fornhamfred,

I'm using the onboard analog audio. I'm assuming that the nvidia audio is just the HDMI audio output on the graphics card I have (gtx 560), but i'm not using that. I'm also using Mint 14.

Right the NVIDIA audio device would be the graphics card's HDMI audio. I see your board has a Realtek ALC892 chip - there's not much we can do to that one. Probably you can try selecting different outputs on the Output tab in Sound. And please make sure you haven't selected your NVIDIA device as default there.

I tried that a while ago, and it didn't work: neither switching to the Nvidia HDMI audio nor the onboard analog audio changed anything. So what you're saying is that i'm out of luck? There has to be a solution, the Asus driver CD had a little text file in the "LinuxDrivers" folder that said "Upgrade to the latest linux kernel for the drivers" or something to that extent (I got the mobo in July). Is Asus just full of hot air or something?

OK

My machine has an Asus M5A78L-M with identical on board sound to you and the it works fine in LMDE and Mint 14 Mate.
Stupid questions now,, is the volume control on the desktop set to 100% and not muted, my sound preferences shows the onboard graphics as bullt in Audio and is set as the preference and profile set to Analogue Sterio Duplex. If you have only two speakers is the output plugged into the green outlet?
This must be something silly that we are missing.

That's exactly how I have it set up right now. I thing something fishy is going on and I'm not sure it relates to the audio drivers. For one, I can't change the alert sound from "Default" (if I click on one of the other selections like sonar, for instance, nothing happens, and Default stays highlighted), and Banshee music player won't play music. What I mean by that is that it just won't play the song, it is perpetually paused. I can move the slider around on the song but nothing happens, the slider stays in place. Plus Banshee crashed on me a couple of times. The sound definitely doesn't work still, because I watched a YouTube video and there wasn't any audio.

For good measure I reinstalled Mint 14 last night in case something went wrong with the installation, but everything still works just fine. I also installed the realek drivers for linux kernel 3.0 from that website and nothing happened (i'm not sure the installation worked).

From your last comment, does that mean that you now have sound working?

If not did you try running the live cd and was the sound working and have you had the sound working with any operating system?

To answer your question, no, the sound isn't working yet unfortunately.

I didn't try the live CD to see if the sound worked, and the sound works fine on my Windows 7 installation and has worked flawlessly for 6 months.

Sorry not sure whether you are saying that the sound worked with the live cd or not. Obviously if it worked with Win 7 then it is not a hardware problem.

There is another gui control for pulse audio you can try and that is pavucontrol which can be downloaded from the package manager. If that does not help, then in the past I have had problems with pulse audio and have resorted to deleting pulse and installing alsa

Have a look at this thread it explains how to remove pulse and install alsa which hopefully will sort the problem. http://www.hecticgeek.com/2012/01/how-t ... ntu-linux/

Well, I followed those instructions, and when I got to actually using gnome-alsamixer (by running it in the terminal), it just popped up showing the gui without anything else in the window.
Image

Then, when I went into the sound card settings, the application crashed and this text appeared in the terminal:

Code: Select all

(gnome-alsamixer:2640): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault
I tried the exact same thing again and it did it again. I'm assuming that we're running out of options here.

You could run alsamixer in terminal to get a console version of the mixer.
