disabling Java?

Post by jems »

Hello, lots of articles/posts warning everyone about java, and encouraging people to disable it.

I've tried, and found the Tools/Add-ons/Plugins section. But I don't see "java".
However, if I visit one of those pages to test if Java is working, it returns:

"Java Version 1.6.0_24 from Sun Microsystems Inc."

So, no idea how to disable it.
What are everyone's thoughts on this, anyway?

probably the eaiset way is simply rename the program, so that it doesn't run or work within any applications that use it, and you would then know which they are, they may not all be obvious..

Its (java disabling..) DOD warning because of a possible virus: java code manipulation.

So, rename /usr/bin/java to something?
I thought it had more to do with the plugins, ie: libjavaplugin_oji.so

In Firefox it's Preferences>Content> uncheck Enable Javascript

You can also uninstall icedtea, that's the plugin. Got the info from here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=119955

How about disable IceTea in FireFox??

Post by windyweather »

In FireFox - Menu Tools > Add Ons > Plugins Tab, then Disable IceTea.
Doesn't that disable the Java plugin in FireFox?
Someday, they might fix it. Or not. But that's easier than uninstalling it.

Works? Right?
Thanks,
