Connection Problem

Post by beginner »

I know this question might sound absurd but, do I need to do something with my drivers? I am always getting disconnected from my wifi ( disconnect, then connected again after 3 seconds) but that is nothing happening in my mom's laptop(windows). This kind of thing wasn't happening to me when I was in windows and I think my linux settings(or whatever you call it is busted. Help me please!

Re: Connection Problem

Post by SiKing »

This is absolutely "normal" behaviour for crappy Linux drivers.
BTW: the blame does not lie with the Linux or Open Source world, the blame is entirely with the WiFi hardware vendor not releasing either 1) decent drivers, or 2) documentation to their stuff so that someone out there would write a decent driver.

For what it's worth I do not agree with the previous reply. In my experience flaky wireless is not "normal." Let's see if we can't get you some actual help now that the ranting's been taken care of.

Can you give us a little information about your wireless hardware? Do you happen to know what wireless chipset your machine has? If not, please open a terminal window, type in sudo lshw, and post the results here. Then we can start narrowing down the issue.

Thank you for replying. Someone told me in xchat that it may be because of my service providers and not with my computer settings or whatsoever. so here is what sudo lshw showed me.

Re: Connection Problem

I searched in forums and found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1645716 I wanted to try if this might just work but I get error 1 and error 2 in 'make'.someone told me that maybe the kernel does not support what i am about to compile. so are there any other suggestions for my original problem?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. But kudos for tackling the build-from-source process on your own.

I'm also sorry to see you have that Ralink wireless. Those cards have been a problem generally, not just for Linux users but for Windows users too.

Here is a download page for Linux drivers for the various Ralink products:

http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_download ... php?sn=501

You want the entry for RT539x. See if that gives you anything useful. If not, you might want to think about trying the Windows driver using ndiswrapper; I understand they did eventually fix the Windows driver. Here's a link to get you started with ndiswrapper if you want to try it. http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-ndis ... ant-howto/
