Noisy FLAC Files

Post by d_mc_e »

Hi Folks,
I have an Acer laptop running Linux Mint 13 Maya.

I have ripped some FLAC files but when I play them through a media player e.g. VLC or MPlayer they play fine but are acompanied by extra "white" noise. It makes a CD recording sound like a bootleg.

When I transfer the exact same FLAC files to my Windows 7 PC, they play perfect and clear as a bell with no background noise.

What could be causing this?

When I watch a Youtube video the audio is perfectly fine.
I am not too sure about audio divers but from checking the sound properties, it seems to be using an Intel/Alsa combination.

Thanks.

Have you tried playing these files using another player, e.g. Totem or Gnome Player?
I think that your files play just as well there as they do on Windows.
I've had the same problem using VLC when playing movies or music, as well.
After a while (i.e. some seconds) it clears up. I think maybe there's something going on with my sound card or drivers.
Nevertheless, every other player (Totem, SMPlayer, Gnome Player, etc.) plays every file without a hitch.

How did you rip the FLAC files? What compression level did you use? I use winff (ffmpeg frontend) with a flac preset that I made. It works great. Just did my entire music collection. :D
