[Howto][Install] Kernel 3.7.6 stable kernels [Easy]

Postby meteorrock » Tue Feb 05, 2013 3:37 am

I am going to show you guys how to upgrade your kernels in Linux Mint the easiest way shown to me by others. You will have to have internet access. You know how other guides have you fool around with precise steps on fetching all of the updated headers for the newest kernels you want to apply, and having to go in and modify boot paths? These steps will save you that effort. The site hosting these kernels can be found here to look over. http://www.kernel.org/

These steps are NOT without risks. So be warned if you have outdated sound or graphic card drivers, this guide might not be for you. This will fetch your kernels for the system you are using , whether 32 or 64 bit. Do not blame me if you bork out your linux mint build with this guide. Open up your terminal. :)

Code: Select all

cd /tmp

Code: Select all

wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/47950494/upubuntu.com/kernel-3.7.6 -O kernel-3.7.6

Code: Select all

chmod +x kernel-3.7.6

Code: Select all

sudo sh kernel-3.7.6

After this last command you will be prompted on the version of kernel for your system. It should auto-select the version for you for the system you are using. Be patient, your internet speed will determine how fast you will update. You will see code updating everything to your grub bootloader and getting your updated headers for your new kernel. Wait until you see the $ prompt in your terminal. Any mistakes here and you WILL bork out your linux mint build.

Code: Select all

sudo reboot

Now reboot. Thats it guys. Enjoy your new kernels with updated features to get the most out of your system. This link here will show you what will all be updated. http://kernelnewbies.org/LinuxChanges

Make sure you have a launchpad account, you guys, for this new kernel. Its fast and stable here for me on both linux mint and the other Ubuntu distro I am using. Faster and smoother than the 3.5+ generic kernels. When you get a bug report make sure to file it. It should pop up as you get a bug so you can file it. Canonical will track these bugs for you and it will help the developers. Linux Mint is in the same kernel and Debian branches as Ubuntu. Thanks. Here is the link for launchpad. https://launchpad.net/

Your linux mint launchpad site is here. https://launchpad.net/linuxmint

Works good under VMware workstation 9.0. Using an AMD 64 bit processor. Got problems with your nvidia video cards on this kernel? Check this link here. http://www.upubuntu.com/2013/02/install ... 76-in.html
