The answer: somewhere in your machine but you don't automatically get to see them on an LXDE desktop. I solved the problem by installing the Gnome ALSA-mixer and adding it to the desktop.ccc wrote:hi

A strictly volume control applet can be added to lxpanel (rt. click panel>add-remove). For more audio controls, instal pavucontrol. See http://lxlinux.com/#15.

For a slightly more sophisticated solution, install PNMixer. http://github.com/nicklan/pnmixer. Here you will also find instructions about downloading and compiling the tarball.
When you have it all working nicely you can edit (as superuser) the file /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart and add the line:
