howto make Linux Mint 14 Nadia lean?

hi guys and gals ,
I just installed on a 1GB laptop and mint 14 is eating about 200MB memory
i was wondering ..is there a way to make it lean / less resource intensive ?
i have unloaded unused kernel modules ..like lp /firewire etc that i dont need
stopped cups ( i dont have a printer )
any other suggestions ?
i tried E17 a few days ago but that sucker was running in 110 MB .. is there anyway to get there from here ?

Can you share which desktop environment you are using, and whether you install 32 bit or 64 bit version?

You can disable some services also, if you don't need them, like Samba and Avahi. I have a post here with the details on that: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p683039. It will be but a minor difference I think.

Why not trying a distro specially made for older computers like DSL or Puppy Linux?

i am looking at that thread now thanx again

as to using dsl etc .. i tried stilaz ( very nifty little thing ) but could not get wifi working
plus i need apt-get to work for some stuff thats really not there on tinycore or stilaz or dsl or puppy

i stopped
avahi daemon
cups
modem-manager
bluetooth ( dont have it on my lappy )
smbd
nmbd
dhclient

and removed modules i dont need

sudo rmmod firewire_ohci
sudo rmmod firewire_core
sudo rmmod crc_itu_t
sudo rmmod firewire
sudo rmmod parport
sudo rmmod lp
sudo rmmod joydev
sudo rmmod pcmcia
sudo rmmod kvm_intel
sudo rmmod bluetooth
sudo rmmod rfcomm
sudo rmmod pcmcia_core
sudo rmmod pcmcia_rsrc
sudo rmmod yenta_socket
sudo rmmod bluetooth
sudo rmmod pcmcia_core
sudo rmmod kvm
sudo rmmod mac_hid



just posting for someone else looking for something similar
boots up in about 11seconds to grub and another 14 seconds to menu

I tried some of those commands and I got errors.

Did you also remove the modules that use those modules?

I saw some services/modules which i don't need to like firewire and pcmcia. I'll give it a try and remove those modules too.

I find that these modules are not removed unless they are blacklisted; rmmod merely removes them until the next reboot.
It also seems like they take up very little memory, if the size is being listed in bytes rather than kilobytes.

Down to 107MB and fast response
