cdrom/dvd device name assignment problem

Post by keithostertag »

I recently built this new box, and am only a little familiar with LinuxMint, MATE I think. Update package 6, all files updated. Kernel 3.2.0-4-amd64.

I have two DVD drives. If I load a data cdrom or data DVD it works as it should in either drive.

If I load a (retail) music disc in either drive and click on "open Banshee" they will play, no problem

However, if I load a music disc in the top drive but choose instead to "open folder" I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

Could not display "cdda://sr0/".

Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name :1.66 was not provided by any .service files
Please select another viewer and try again.
If I load the music disc in the bottom drive I don't get that error message- I get the file browser as I expect. But when I double click on any of the music file icons the system attempts to load VLC and gives me an error message that says:

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda://sr1/Track%205.wav'. Check the log for details.
I haven't figured out which log file it is referring to.

So it seems I have some kind of conflict. Here's what wodim says:

Code: Select all

keith@ada:/$ wodim -devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (2 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
 0 dev='/dev/sg0'	rwrw-- : 'ATAPI' 'iHAS124 D'
 1 dev='/dev/sg2'	rwrw-- : 'TSSTcorp' 'CDDVDW TS-H653Z'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
keith@ada:/$
Yet, DMESG reports that I am also using /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1 as the device names for my drives:

keith@ada:~$ dmesg | grep -i sr0
[ 2.322828] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 2.322921] sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
keith@ada:~$ dmesg | grep -i sr1
[ 2.326341] sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 2.326421] sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
keith@ada:~$ dmesg | grep -i sg0
[ 2.327299] sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5
keith@ada:~$ dmesg | grep -i sg2
[ 2.327346] sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5
keith@ada:~$ dmesg | grep -i cddvdw
[ 2.289522] ata3.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z, HD00, max UDMA/100
[ 2.316551] scsi 2:0:0:0: CD-ROM TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z HD00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
keith@ada:~$

If I load a data DVD in the top drive and view the output of mount I see:

Code: Select all

/dev/sr0 on /media/CDROM type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500,uhelper=udisks)
But when I take that same disc out of the top drive and put it in the bottom drive I see this from mount:

Code: Select all

/dev/sr0 on /media/CDROM type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500,uhelper=udisks)
/dev/sr1 on /media/CDROM_ type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500,uhelper=udisks)
So, the system thinks the top drive is still present (mounted). And it says they are mounted at /media/CDROM using the /dev/sr* device names.

What's going on here?

I originally started checking this out because I couldn't figure out what to give GRIP as a device designation for the cdrom drive. Nothing I give it works- not /dev/sr0, /media/CDROM, or any combination I can think of. I realize GRIP isn't part of the Mint distro, but I'd like to use it if possible. Also, I'd prefer to be able to use VLC when I want (instead of Banshee).

Any ideas about what the conflict is?

Thanks,
Keith Ostertag

Additional info:

If I load a disc into either drive, then eject it, the icon doesn't leave the desktop and the file browser seems to think the drive is still loaded. Here's what I get after the drive has been ejected:

Code: Select all

keith@ada:~$ lsof | grep -i sr0

Also, I now notice that there is no optical drive line in fstab- this is a stock load from the distro, so shouldn't there be one for each drive?

Here's my fstab:

OK, I found the best solution.

The best solution was to dump LinuxMint. It had been nothing but problems for the few weeks I worked with it. I guess I am just not the DesktopEnvironment type.

I had loaded it for my wife thinking it might be easier for her to use (since she's not accustomed to Linux). But I have just loaded Debian on it, and all those problems have vanished. No conflicts, no errors. And I can use whatever window-manager and programs I choose (and nothing more). Oh yea, and GRIP works fine.

Goodbye LinuxMint.
