All I know is that it stops my laptop drive from clicking and driving me mad.

Not very technical but sure someone else knows more if not i'm sure google would have an answer.

It is a very powerful tool, messing mindlessly about with it can potentially break your HDD, so you are warned. But also an incredible useful tool.

This bears repeating. I would dare say as many hard drives have been damaged by hdparm as have been helped.

Make sure you know what you are doing before using it.
