Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
First post!!
I recently bought an inspiron 7720. I removed Windows 8 and installed Windows 7. I wanted to dual boot Win 7 and Mint however this whole uefi technology is new to me. The laptop has a 1TB HDD and a 32GB SSD set up raid 0. Windows boots in seconds. I created 3 partitions, one for windows, one for linux install and a 3rd partition for sharing stuff between both OSs. Problem, you guessed it, I booted fro the live CD and it would not recognize my windows install.
After 3 days of research I finally realized that uefi is a conspiracy against Win/Linux dual booters!
So i have been searching and tried many different workarounds to no avail. so here is my question.
I have been searching but my search criteria is returning too many results, (about 10K). If I have 2 physical hard drives, can I install windows 7 to one hard drive and mint to the other hard drive in a dual boot environment without jumping through uefi workaround hoops? If I install windows 7 to HDD1, will the live CD recognize my windows install and allow me to install Mint to HDD2?

Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
If you mean that you can't see any partitions on your disk, then the problem has nothing to do with EFI: This is a symptom of a damaged partition table. My suspicion in this case is that you've actually done a BIOS-mode install of Windows, which has created a new MBR partition scheme but left some unused GPT data on the hard disk. If this suspicion is correct, you can fix the problem with my FixParts program. Once this is done, you should boot the Mint installer in BIOS mode (by disabling EFI support in your firmware or selecting a non-EFI boot option for the installation medium). If I'm wrong in any of my suppositions in this line of reasoning, you'll need to be more precise: Describe the exact symptoms you're seeing and post the RESULTS.txt file you get when you run the Boot Info Script from a Linux emergency disc. This will enable a better diagnosis of what's happening with your system.cornleader wrote:I recently bought an inspiron 7720. I removed Windows 8 and installed Windows 7. Installing on two physical disks is certainly possible, but my suspicion is that you've jumped to an incorrect conclusion and that pursuing the solution you suggest will leave you with lingering problems at best or create new problems at worst. (This is not to say that you can't install on two disks, though; I'm just saying that attempting to install on two disks without fixing any problem you already have, and without understanding the BIOS- vs. EFI-mode boot of your current Windows 7 setup, is likely to cause additional problems.)I have been searching but my search criteria is returning too many results, (about 10K). Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
EDIT:
Yea it gives me no partiton data to install to.
I ran your program but I might have messed it up. I'm not really sure how to run it. I did however boot to a live cd, download and ran bootinfoscript and here are my results. One thing I will mention is that my SSD deive seems to be GPT partitioned.

Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
You may have run FixParts, but you didn't use it correctly, as evidenced by the following in the Boot Info Script output:
That's one of the problems that FixParts will fix; it will ask you if you want to delete the old GPT data, and you must reply in the affirmative. Once you do this you should be able to install Mint, but be sure to do it in BIOS mode, not in EFI mode.Code: Select all

Now when I run fixparts i get this in the console
Before it was saying I had a problem. Now it justs asks for a command.
I ran boot info script and the output is different. Still no partitions to install mint to. Windows still boots though.
Code: Select all

Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
It looks like you may have some stray RAID data on your hard disk. You can usually remove this with the following command:
If the problem recurs, you should check your firmware settings for hard disk access modes and disable RAID as an option there.
Code: Select all
sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sda

This DID allow me to install mint however i screwed up. I use fixparts to change a logical partition to a primary, don't ask, then divided another partition for swap, / and home. But when I installed mint, i selected the wrong partition, hda1 i think and it put grub on the wrong partition. When I selected windows from grub it went black then back to grub screen. I had to run fixmbr and another windows boot utility to get into windows. Then a checkdisk, probably from changing logical drive to primary. Also I think I messup the partitions on my SSD. I know nothing about this stuff. SSD, UEFI, rapid start is all new to me.
When I was able to get back into windows only, because I disabled the raid info on hda, i lost my rapid start in win 7, so it takes forever to boot and all my programs are missing dll's, probably once again from messing with the partitions that had data on them. So I think I'm really screwed and looks like a full reinstall of windows. I'm not sacrificing the speed of the windows ssd drive for a dual boot system.
Is there anyway I can recover from this? without a full reinstall? Its all because of boot partitions, boot installers and MBR.
sigh.................
Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
It's unclear from your description what your computer's current state is. Please run Boot Info Script again (from a Linux emergency disc like Parted Magic, if necessary) and post its RESULTS.txt output. Also, to the extent that your Windows problems are Windows-specific (missing DLLs, etc.), you're likely to get better help on a Windows forum than here.

Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
Based on your new thread, I suspect you intend to start fresh and my reply may be irrelevant; but your system seems to be configured to boot directly to Windows. You can re-install GRUB to get the computer to boot either OS. There are various ways to do this, but the easiest is most likely to run the Ubuntu Boot Repair tool, which I'm told works fine with Mint, too. That won't help you with your Windows-specific problems, but there's a good chance that it will get Linux booting again.

Re: Windows 7 Mint dual boot UEFI headache
I really appreciate all your help but I think I really messed it up. Unfortunately I have no choice but to have Windows as my primary OS and linux is for, well no need to explain that on a linux forum.
Looks like I installed the MBR to the wrong partition and formated my SSD out of pure stupidity, (one of my windows issues), and for some bright idea changed a logical or extended partition to a primary that had windows data on it. So I figured my best bet is to give in and start fresh. Wipe the whole drive clean. As you can see from my results things just kept getting worse lol.
I started a new thread HERE.
I'm sure I could fix this with lots of help but in my case it might be faster if I started from scratch.
