I read the post by Clem on the future of LMDE KDE.
Doesn't look very promising to me that this will be kept up with.
Is there a way to find out how many of us that are using this are out here.
I am curious what all of you are going to do.
KDE is my favorite and LMDE is also my favorite either in Testing or SID.
I am at a loss of what to do now.

Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
Which post? Because as I understand this is still the plan (from http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 00#p693138):
In the mean time, you could install KDE on top of LMDE.clem wrote:Fred is the maintainer of the main KDE edition and he's also currently coordinating the Cinnamon and MATE UP6 releases. He will take the LMDE KDE and Xfce editions through QA and probably eventually release them as official community editions.
Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
That is what I am running now.
However new KDE updates like going to 4.10 is in limbo for LMDE KDE is what I was referring to.
It might be a while for an "eventual" release.

Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
That doesn't have much to do with LMDE; it's Debian that doesn't have a recent KDE SC version in its testing repository. Until Debian 7 is released, that's unlikely to change. But even now I think even the unstable repository of Debian has an older KDE version.
Perhaps there is a Debian repository to get a current version of KDE? Edit: see below, Transitman already replied it Anyway, Debian is conservative and aims for stability. If you want bleeding edge software, Debian package base might not be for you.

Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
You could always install from this repo:
I got this from a post from zerozero.
Code: Select all
##### KDE Experimental
deb http://qt-kde.debian.net/debian experimental-snapshots main
deb-src http://qt-kde.debian.net/debian experimental-snapshots main
Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
Well you both bring up some good points.
I started down LMDE due to the "rolling release" somewhat cutting edge "Testing" repos.
It seems that Main Mint release is more cutting edge than LMDE "rolling". Maybe I still don't understand the concepts.
LMDE is stable. But I would think that a testing release would be more unstable than a Mint Standard release. But you can get later releases of software there.
I have crashed too many times with "Experimental". Too risky for me.
I don't mind rebuilding my system every so often.
That is why I posed the question.
For those of us that like LMDE and KDE what is our options.
I guess what you have listed is the options.
I am thinking about switching to Mint KDE. That is in a current development cycle isn't it or will it be just Mint Cinnamon and Mate?
Thanks again for your viewpoints.
Are you guys running any version of Linux with KDE?

Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
Dan,
debian is in freezing (has been since last june and will be probably until late april, we really don't when it will end; when debian 7 is deemed good to be released)
this means that all the development in the debian eco-system slowed down and this also reflects in sid and in experimental (both have been very "stable" in the last months because all the focus is preparing debian 7)
furthermore kde is one of the hardest DEs to run in debian (and it's the one i love the most): there's no man-power to build and release a new kde every month like upstream is doing
the "fun" will begin again after (maybe) april until the next freeze (one and a half/2 years from now): this is the debian life
you don't need to give up on lmde (you might if you want- main edition is also great) but you need to "see" the flow of debian
want kde 4.9.5? here ya go http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 7&t=125513
want to go to sid safely? here ya go http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 1&t=123323
will it break? sure! backup.

Re: LMDE - KDE - What now
As zerozero shared, you don't need to give up on LMDE yet But, and I'll defer to zerozero on this, if you want the latest KDE you might want to consider using the main edition of Linux Mint with KDE. The Kubuntu developers do make time to bring you the latest KDE release, and you get the benefit of that on the main edition of Linux Mint also. It worked without a hitch for me; running KDE SC 4.10 for over a month now... zerozero has the steps here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 12#p684113. I didn't run into any problems But if you prefer LMDE, I'd say hold on till Debian 7 gets here and from zerozero's comments I'd figure Debian will get around to the newer version of KDE also.dcihon wrote:I am thinking about switching to Mint KDE.
