USB is dead, i want to use it again

Post by DC80 »

Hi all,

Sorry for the cryptic title as I not know what is happening. I have some knowledge about the system however I'm learning every day! So, can someone help me with this problem.

What do i have installed?
- Linux Mint 14 Nadia (cinnamon)
- VMware workstation 9

Vmware workstation is relevant since i also use this for my usb drives and my samsung galaxy s2 smartphone.

What is the problem?

Whenever i connect my smartphone to get it on my windows machine in workstation it cuts off the connection. As I connect my smartphone I will see it is connected as a media connection (MTP), the other option is to connect it as a camera (I don't use) in the topbar of Android. However, when the connection dies i do see nothing. It just charges the battery and that's it. When i try to reconnect it by pulling out the usb cable and then in it does nothing. Also when I try to connect another device like a thumbdrive or my WD passport it does nothing, they don't even get recognized.

The only workaround for now is to reboot the system every time this happens, which is pretty annoying. The strange thing is, my keyboard is still working...

Did i do some diagnostics?

I ran dmesg | tail which outputed this:

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply but this is not the problem. The USB devices do work in vmware until something goes wrong (see output of dmesg above).

I will try to find more info about this in the meantime....
