I would give Lubuntu a try or even mint xfce.
If you could give us a few more specs on the machine it would help with suggestions
processor type and speed?
how much ram ?

Try out Crunchbang, a Debian based light-weight distro featuring openbox WM.

Yep how much ram and type Cpu will dictate distro used.
xfce is a good choice.

But 2ghz with 2gb of ram then more choices of distro's to give a whirl with.

1 GB RAM, 2 GHz 1 core processor. It's old like I said.

I find xfce far too slow on my netbook and have recently stuck Zorin 6.2 lite on it which is Lubuntu, found this via icyos's http://www.youtube.com/user/TheLinuxNet ... ture=watch - only problem with Zorin is its absolutely UGLY. Going to try LXLE on there next. http://www.lxle.net

Just tried the LXLE as a live usb, runs really well on my netbook - I will be installing this tomorrow.

Machine: System: Packard Bell product: DOTS version: V1.01
CPU: Single core Intel Atom CPU N450 (-HT-) cache: 512 KB flags: Clock Speeds: 1: 1666.00 MHz
HDD Size: 160.0GB
MEM 1GB

It should work really well on a laptop.

He installed Mate and seems like it works pretty smooth.

Thanks for the answers. If his laptop is getting slow now I can give him a plenty of suggestions. :)

I installed LM 13 Mate on a 10 year old Compaq laptop with 650(ish)ram and a single core 1.6GHz processor, worked well.

not as old as mine....... Intel M 1.5mb + 1gb ddr2 and although boot time isn't brilliant [still faster than windows was] I run the full blown version M13 cinnamon

I assume the XFCE edition would be apt for the configuration.
