LMDE Boot Failure
I'm trying to install LMDE (linuxmint-201303-cinnamon-dvd-64bit-rc.iso) on a Dell Precision T3500. I've written the ISO to two different USB sticks, and each time I boot from the stick, I get a message stating "Process: 346 GLib-Warning getpwuid_r() failed due to unknown userid (0)"
I've checked the MD5 against the ISO, and written the ISO to two different 4GB USB sticks. I've tried both the LiveCD and install modes. The boot hangs at that error every time. The system has 12GB of ram, and has installed/run CentOS6 without any problems. Plus I've used both of these USB sticks to install other Linux ISO to other systems just fine..
Have I found a bug?
Thanks

can you try compatibility mode?
this is a plymouth error msg; it shouldn't stop the boot.Process: 346 GLib-Warning getpwuid_r() failed due to unknown userid (0)
can you try compatibility mode?
Re: LMDE Boot Failure
Thanks for the reply.. In one case, I waited for over 10 min at that hang and the boot never continued. Not sure what "compatibilty mode" is..
Just for drill I tried a DebianSqueeze install, and all went well, which, I guess I'd expect, since you say this is a Plymouth error, and I don't think Debian uses Plymouth..

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
I do know that Plymouth testing was a failure in the RC iso you were testing, so maybe you stuck on something that made that bug more serious.
Talking about booting bugs, I've also spotted some about the RC you're using and, could possibly interfere.
Unfortunately, no LMDE maintainer hasn't respond yet about them:

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
Thanks for the info, apparently that RC is the only LMDE version available.. Not interested in the Ubuntu-based version. I love Mint, but need a working install on this new machine, so I guess I'm gonna stick to the DebianSqueeze install I put on it to test....
Re: LMDE Boot Failure
I tried it with the released version of 201303 Cinnamon and did three tests:
64-bit and 32-bit versions on HP Laptop 6930p
64-bit version on my desktop HP xw6200
All three failed. Attached is a screen shot with some traces from the desktop.

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
i'm experiencing the exact same problem and error message. Tried to install the 64Bit Cinnamon and the 64bit Mat edition on my Acer Aspire 3750G to no avail. Tried both installations from different usb-sticks, but the installation stops completely after the error message, even ctrl-alt-del doesn't work so i have to switch the laptop off with the power button.
Tried the installation also with "acpi=off" without any success and with "nomodeset", again no success.
I was able to install the normal Linux Mint Cinnamon 64Bit two weeks ago without a problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks
T.

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
I also cannot install LMDE on a inspiron mini 10.
I installed in this same computer linux mint mate olivia with some problems due to the broadcom driver.
Trying to install LMDE, I have a warning:
GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown use,
but the live usb run without problems.
Then i tried normal installing (and sudo live-installer), and it always stops at language selection.
When I write sudo live-installer the output is
VIDIOC_QUERYMENU: Invalid argument
VIDIOC_QUERYMENU: Invalid argument
VIDIOC_QUERYMENU: Invalid argument
WARNING: Can not find "None" in "us"
then language selection begins, but nothing happens afterwards.

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
@wanchai - I've seen this error before. Have you tried adding "rootdelay= 8" to your boot parameters?
As for myself, I'm getting a lot of Glibc errors. I burned the ISO. Could it be the disk? I did md5sum though and everything matched. One of the error I was able to write down is: "missing /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libapt-pkg.so.4.12". I checked the folder and the file is there. There were more errors pertaining to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu folder but I could not catch them all (too quick for my eyes) but I saw something about resolve.conf and a lot of GLIBC 2.14, GLIBC 2.15 version error messages. Sorry, could not give you guys the exact error. Tried looking for it on every log files under /var/log but could not find it.
Another thing I noticed is that under /usr/lib folder, I see a few links to a file that has a "broken link".
- command-not-found
- libAMDXvBA.cap
- libaticalcl.so
- libaticalrt.so
- libOpenCL.so
Other minor issues that I noticed. (I was able to manually fix myself)
- during installation, it did not find the other OS installed on my hard drive. So I had to edit the grub.cfg myself
- I installed LMDE on sda2 but on grub.cfg it is on sda7

Re: LMDE Boot Failure
Same problem here on Dell Vostro 3300. Does anyone have some update on this?
Re: LMDE Boot Failure
How are you creating your Live USB? I tried making one with Unetbootin, but it didn't work. The Universal USB Installer from http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ worked for me.stuchl4n3k wrote:Same problem here on Dell Vostro 3300.
