Is my laptop overheating?

Post by Guit4eva »

Hey guys,

I have installed Bumblebee on my Dell XPS 15, still only getting about an hour of battery:( This is the output of sensors on idle:

Code: Select all

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +54.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
temp2: +54.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
and sometimes:

Code: Select all

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +64.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
temp2: +64.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
Is that too hot? And is there a way to check the health of my battery? It's a real bummer that I can only get an hour out of it at the mo :/

The temperatures are nothing to worry about, I believe they are quite normal for the Dell XPS 15. But of course if your laptop needs to work harder to cool down, it will drain more energy from your battery. If you want a longer battery life, you can always have a look at the power management settings, it might also let the temperatures drop a little.

To check your battery health, open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
It will show you the designed capacity of your battery and the last full capacity.

Thank you for your reply. This is the output I get:

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
present: yes
design capacity: 5200 mAh
last full capacity: 2544 mAh
battery technology: non-rechargeable
design voltage: 11100 mV
design capacity warning: 254 mAh
design capacity low: 0 mAh
cycle count: 0
capacity granularity 1: 100 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 0 mAh
model number: Dell
serial number: 26697
battery type: LION
OEM info: Unknow
Does that mean I need to call Dell Warranty?

Depending on how old the laptop is and what the warranty period of your battery is, yes I think it would be a reason to get in contact with Dell. Note however that the warranty period of the battery is usually shorter than that of the laptop (usually 1 year). See: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/glob ... s=19#faq38
