SOLVED Mate using Intel's drivers

Post by Georgia boy »

Marking as 'solved'. Had gone to something else after the incident of the upgrade that time where it got toasted. But while using I let it choose what it wanted and was happy with. Worked fine.

On my laptop I installed Mate. I noticed that it's using my Intel Graphics. I would had assumed that it would had grabbed the FOSS drivers instead upon installation. I noticed this when I went to see about installing the Nvidia drivers. Is this normal for a Mint product to do this? Mate is my first experience with a Mint product. As you can see in my signature my desktop uses Squeeze and Xubuntu. The Asus laptop is now using Mate instead of Win7. Got tired of Windows and ditched it for Mate. But back to the drivers here. Why would this happen and would I mess things up by going into Synaptic and mark for removal and adding the Nvidia drivers for installation? It's GEFORCE 610m,
Including some screenshots to show what I mean. Also adding lshw and lsusb just in case they're needing to be looked at. This will will save some time waiting for them. If anything else is needed please ask and give terminal commands that is needed.
Thanks.

Are you sure you don't have hybrid graphics?

Nvidia driver install is

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Looking at the Hardware code again. It does seem to be hybrid.
You need to look at the bumblebee project I think

How can you tell hybrid? But isn't Bumblebee for Ubuntu and Ubuntu based? I thought that Mate was based off of Debian testing. Also, would it make a difference in Intel graphics being selected? That one screenshot of the Synaptic package does show that Intel is the graphics installed right? Or am I misreading the settings?

Bumblebee is not distro specific
Mint is based on Ubuntu

Whatever OS you are using there should be a way to use Bumblebee for it
It's not clear to me exactly what OS you are using?

Re: Mate using Intel's drivers

Post by caf4926 »

I thought that Mate was based off of Debian testing. Also, would it make a difference in Intel graphics being selected? That one screenshot of the Synaptic package does show that Intel is the graphics installed right? Or am I misreading the settings?
Mate is nothing to do with debian, it's a Desktop environment intended to supply something like what was lost by gnome 2 being shelved.

Intel drivers normally get installed by default and are mostly integrated to the linux kernel

Some people just use the intel (I would myself as I have no need for nvidia on my laptop) (that is if I even had nvidia, which I don't)
But if you want the nvidia then bumblebee is the way to go
FYI: It can be problematic

Bumblebee is not distro specific
Mint is based on Ubuntu

I'm using Linux LMDE Mate latest version. So then at this rate you're saying that I will be able to get by as is without having to install the Nvidia drivers. It's that it came with the laptop and I was using wine had Win7 on it. Plus that is what I've used lon the desktop with Squeeze and Xubuntu. I only have the Linux Mint LMDE Mate on the laptop. I was just surprised to see that it was running the Intel graphics. I was used to the FOSS drivers being used on the other distros before going to Nvidia. Now that you did the snippet I can see. The first part is saying about the Nvidia capability but not in force. The second part is same thing only Intel and is showing Intel as in force running the show. Right?
So if I leave as is all will be fine and will work.

It will work fine as is with the Intel graphics

BTW: LMDE is not like Mint - As LMDE is not in any way related to Ubuntu (Well they are both debian based) but Ubuntu PPA'a are not to be used with LMDE.
You can though, for example, should you wish, download the Debian Chrome Browser and install that.
I have the LMDE Mate on my little eeepc and it's wonderful.

That's why I was wondering about the Bumblebee bit. Didn't sound right when I was using LMDE Mate. Like Mate so far. TB was acting up saying to do the update then when you click okay it would sit there trying to go to some server. See that there is an issue with that. One fix is to go in as root and pull in and update and then go back to regular. Or just wait till next pack comes out. Think I'll wait until then. I just unchecked the automatic update on TB and will wait till the Pack comes in.
