This is what I found
The order of repositories in sources.list is only important if you have two reositories with the same packages. Then the first one is used.
Never thought of that....
Perhaps this gives some insight into setting up your own repo

Remember you only have a need for this if you want to supply people with some software

Actually, the order in which the repositories are listed in your sources.list file is irrelevant. If packages are found in more than one repository, then the highest version is preferred (assuming that's how you've configured Apt.)

Thanks cmost - I've never before given it a thought and what I found and mentioned in my answer was for Debian and I assumed it to be the same here (and I don't really know how old that page I found was)
