Problems playing audio and video through Kaffeine or VLC

Post by JonnJack »

Doesn't matter what kind of video file it is, avi, mp4, mkv, etc. ,all give the same error.
Mint 14 is running on an Acer Aspire 4810T-8480 laptop.
When I try to open any video file that is located on my Windows box (a quad core HP desktop) I get an error:
In Kaffeiene it is:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL "smb://Penny@pennysplaytoy/Users/Public/Recorded%20TV/Band%20Of%20Brothers/Band%20Of%20Brothers%20Ep01%20-%20Currahee.avi"

If I try to open them directly from VLC I get:
You can only select local files

If I go through the file browser (Dolphin) I get:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'smb://Penny@pennysplaytoy/Users/Public/Recorded%20TV/Band%20Of%20Brothers/Band%20Of%20Brothers%20Ep01%20-%20Currahee.avi'. Check the log for details.

However audio files play through Amarok with no problems at all. Text files and Word documents open with no hesitation at all. Picture files (jpg, png, gif) open with no errors.
Other than this, so far Mint has been really easy to work with. What do I have to do to get the video files to play in either Kaffeiene or VLC (I don't care which one, was long as the videos work).

You could use Nautilus instead of Dolphin. With Nautilus it works fine.
