Linux Mint logo in Google Search. How do I get rid of it?

Post by ublungu »

A Linux Mint logo is appearing at the top of all my Google search results. This is happening in Chrome 26.0.1410.64 in a Windows 7 PC different to the one where I have Linux Mint installed while I am not logged in to Linux Mint Community websites or forum. I don't know why this is happening and how to get rid of it. Please help.

See this post: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... 59#p680943. Please read carefully before you run that one command that will remove the Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) from Chrome. This is the way I know how to do it that works, but it will delete all your preferences, bookmarks, extensions, and so on from Chrome.

Thank you for your reply. But how would doing something on my chromium install in Linux Mint will solve the problem I see in Chrome in another machine with only Windows? And what did I do to get the Linux Mint logo in my Google searches within Windows?

Google Chrome/Chromium have a sync feature so that your bookmarks, etc. carry over to other installations of their browser. When I go into Windows 8 (hardly ever), Google Chrome has all the bookmarks (including ones I've added only when using Mint) that the Chrome in Mint has.

Thanks again, and sorry to keep bugging you with this issue, but I am not talking about a bookmark or a theme that I chose. I don't recall having chosen to have my Google searches wrapped in Linux Mint wherever I go. I appreciate the community and developers' efforts and I mean no offense but at least in one relatively harmless behavior Linux Mint is acting like Windows malware by hijacking my browser on every computer I use. I should be able to remove this feature without too much hassle.

I don't use Chrome (or Windows) so I can't experiment much, but I wanted to say, I think that little icon is called a favicon - the same thing that displays in the address bar. Maybe you could check if Chrome has an option to disable updating/sharing the favicon between sessions?

(Curiously, I think Chrome dropped favicons from the address bar some time ago, then Firefox followed. But both still have favicons in the search bar which just seems odd to me.)

No, it's not a favicon. It's in the body of the search results page.

settings > search engines
theirs 2 Google search engines there. delete the one with http://www.google.com/cse?cx=0026834153 ... &sa=Search

Was really aggravated by this and searched through the settings. no longer reffers to LM search when i type in google in the address bar.

I'm sorry, you said "logo" yet I still thought "icon".

Does this article help?

OR, you might actually have an easier option in the search engine settings. I just installed Chrome and, for me the first engine option is minty google, and the second is vanilla google. (Then Yahoo and Bing.)
