Removing Wine repository guidance Help

Post by Fookyfu »

My issue have just started when I went to software source and attempting to add a ppa in the additional repositories. I try adding "ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa" as a repository but something went wrong. Now my synaptic is acting funny giving me this error.
"E: Type 'ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."
My synaptic just crash afterward.

I attempt to remove the repository in terminal but I get an error on it as well. Need some guidance on how to remove this repository .

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSources/mintSources.py", line 1206, in <module>
    add_ppa_via_cli(ppa_line, codename)
  File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSources/mintSources.py", line 32, in add_ppa_via_cli
    user, sep, ppa_name = line.split(":")[1].partition("/")
IndexError: list index out of range
I'm using Mint 15 mate 64bit
Please help, Thanks in advance

Hello, Fookyfu.
"E: Type 'ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
This suggests that the incorrect line is the first line in the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list.
Open a terminal window and run the command

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
Inside the text editor gedit comment out the first line by prefixing a # to the whole line.
Save the file and close gedit.
Next run the commandline

Code: Select all

inxi -r
and post he output here.

The correct commandline to add the Wine PPA to your repository list should read

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
Kind regards,
Karl

The command didn't go through. I think there must be a typo somewhere. "sudo: gedit: command not found" is what I get as an error. I also try gksudo but that didn't work either. When i read up on gedit. Seem like it's a program i have to install. When I try to install it. No package would be located.

Hello, Fookyfu.

The commandline

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
works perfectly on all Linux Mint systems that have got the text editor gedit installed.
Apparently there is no gedit on your Linux Mint. So instead of trying to install gedit just to make the commandline above work, use the text editor which is present on your system.
One text editor which will always be there is vi.
So the changed commandline which must work reads

Code: Select all

sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
Kind regards,
Karl

The Vi text editor works., but I'm a little confuse on the next step because I ran into

Code: Select all

E325: ATTENTION
Found a swap file by the name "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/.additional-repositories.
list.swp"
owned by: root dated: Sat Jun 8 10:51:57 2013
         file name: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
          modified: YES
user name: root host name: phu-GA-990FXA-UD3
        process ID: 2724
While opening file "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list"
             dated: Fri Jun 7 14:52:47 2013

(1) Another program may be editing the same file. If this is the case,
be careful not to end up with two different instances of the same
file when making changes. Quit, or continue with caution.
(2) An edit session for this file crashed.
If this is the case, use ":recover" or "vim -r /etc/apt/sources.list.d/addit
ional-repositories.list"
to recover the changes (see ":help recovery").
If you did this already, delete the swap file "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/.addi
tional-repositories.list.swp"
    to avoid this message.
"/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list" 3 lines, 84 characters
Press ENTER or type command to continue
This part confuses me, when I try to put in a prefix# nothing happen other than it move my cursor into a different location. Then I just try deleteing everything but could'nt save and close Vi. Is there a certain short cut key to save and exit out of vi?

Code: Select all

ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
deb http://packages.domain.com/ raring main
~
~
~

Vi editors use keyboard key commands, not like some graphical editor. You can't really move with cursors like normally.

Look here the commands...
http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uvi.htm

Example, move down the line what you want to comment with "down cursor" key. Then hit letter "i" when you are front of that line, press "#" then "esc". Save the change with ":w"
":q" gets your out. ":q!" force you out even if it want's to save. Usefull when you messesed up stuff what happens easylly when first time use vi.

If you are not comfortable with Vi, you can use "nano" instead => "(sudo) nano <textfile_to_edit>".
