Laptop drops speaker output after 5 minutes (Intel audio)

Post by ausminter »

I've had some ongoing sound issues with mint on my laptop that I can't really sort out. It works fine on windows 7 and will work for a few minutes after booting Mint, but then it stops leaving me with headphone output only.

I posted a few times looking for help without any luck, but mostly I've just been reading endless pages of dead ends.

It seems to be almost standard on this forum for anyone with sound problems to be for the most part ignored by those experienced enough to help. I've been reading a lot of old threads and no-one seems to want to help.

This will be my last ditch effort at fixing this problem before I change to something that works.

I would like to thank the kind soul who assisted me the other night on IRC, he was using the nick MAD_DOG amongst others.
He guided me to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo
Where I was directed to a script which generated a report on my sound system.
Here's the report if anyone is interested.

I love this OS but if I can't get the sound to work then I'm forced to look somewhere else.

Re: Laptop drops speaker output after 5 minutes (Intel audio

Updated your topic subject and moved post here. I understand the disappointment, but the subject you picked wasn't going to catch the eye of those that might be able to help with this.

I don't think it is a question of wanting so much as that these are difficult problems to solve.

I did search for your "Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200" audio chip, and that is included in Ubuntu certified laptops so this might not be a audio chip problem? http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/component/pci/8086:1c20/

I see you are running Linux Mint 14. If you are going to make any last ditch efforts, I'd say get Linux Mint 15 and try it with that (if only booted from the live session to test for 10 minutes some audio there). A newer kernel as shipped with Linux Mint 15 generally has better/more hardware support and might fix it.

As to the speaker output dropping off after 5 minutes, leaving you with only headphones, does that happen also with a continuous audio stream? So let's say you put on a MP3 album and just let it play while you go do some household chores or something; does the audio drop from the speakers somewhere mid song?

And how have you connected the speakers; do you mean the laptop's inbuilt speakers or do you have external speakers connected somehow?

Thanks for the reply, I couldn't find the post I made today and I was starting to think I'd stepped on someones toes

Yeah it's quite common for the sound to drop out midstream. That's if I had sound to start with, most times the system will boot and have no sound at all.

I'm just using the internal speakers.

I installed the jack sensing app (QjackCtl) to try and help diagnose my problem, the problem was there before I installed that.

Installing Mint 14 was a last ditch effort to rectify the problems that started when I installed Mint 13. Mint 12 worked fine as far as sound goes but it had other problems with network hardware. the sound worked fine on the live session for 14 so I thought the problem was solved and installed it, then the problem started showing up.

Ah :( Have you checked in Software Sources > Additional Drivers tab if there are any proprietary drivers available for your laptop?

You might try a search for your specific model laptop. A medion I believe? Regular websites I'd consult for that, like linlap, don't have much info on medion. Laptops continue to be a mixed bag with Linux. Though the big name brands are getting better it is still very common that not everything will work out of the box. For media keys, backlights, suspend, and such things there are I think more users that will have an idea how to solve it. Intel HDA should just work but it doesn't for you so that might be laptop model specific issue...

Note that keeping your headphones plugged in will mute the speakers normally, just throwing that out there in case it was something silly like that (I hardly think so, but better said than sorry I say).

I've also tried removing pulse audio but that killed the output from my headphones as well. Now I've reinstalled pulse audio the jack sensing and mute settings are functioning properly and the sound is working on the headphones again.

I'll try installing Mint 15 in a few weeks, I've chewed through all my data this month installing the adk bundle & a stack of android ROMs and tools. Reading endless pages of dead ends about my sound problem chewed a bit as well.

I just downladed Mint 15 and ran it from USB stick as suggested.

That was a wasted gig of data, it's excactly the same as Mint 14.

If you guys can't get sound to work on genuine intel hardware then something is very very wrong.

Where's the development team in all this ?
It's very rare for them chime in when people have sound problems. Maybe they are not up to the task.
I've been trying to get this sorted for over a year and observed many others with similar problems give up in frustration.

I can't sit in the corner holding my breath any longer, it's time to ditch Mint.

Get your act together Clem, this is not good enough.
Maybe some of the donated money should be going to employ someone that knows what's going on

I'll be advising people not to use Mint from now on.

Audio drivers are built into the kernel; that's not the area the Linux Mint developers work on, that is the domain of the kernel developers. Intel generally develops the drivers for that themselves so you would expect this to just work (as does the Intel HD Audio on my computer for example). Might be this is a laptop, and those can be more problematic because the manufacturers don't all support Linux and might have done things on the laptop's motherboard that don't sit right with the Intel driver.

Generally 95% of the hardware out there works fine with the Linux kernel; if you get stuck with one in the last 5% it can be a real bummer and sometimes it looks like there is no solution (at least not an easy one). Using a newer release might solve it, as it will have a newer Linux kernel and with that generally improved hardware support from newer drivers.

Sorry to see you go, but when the Linux kernel doesn't work right with your hardware many of us would of course do the same :( I hope you find another OS that does give you working audio.
