Linux disros that look like Windows.

Post by Jessey Lawson »

I love Linux, but Windows does have a good look. Now some users only want something that looks like Windows. I know that Zorin looks like Windows, but Longhorn Linux looks more like Windows with its theme but it uses gnome 2. Mint does not look nothing like Windows, but LXDE can be themed to look like Windows 95/98.

Since they won't operate exactly alike, the look may not be enough.

The underlying OS operations will still be different, but if it is only for the look people may want it..

If you really want a desktop that looks like Windows, then start with XFCE.

This post is a few years old and deals with XFCE 4.4, but gives some tips on how to get going.

Exactly +1

Most grouchy old people like me prefer the Windows Classic desktop. (Win 2000). That is why we added Classic Start Menu to Win 7 and refuse to use Win 8.
With Xfce I can easily put the top panel on the bottom, and auto hide the other panel, and then the start menu is back in the bottom left corner where God intended for it to be. Change the background to solid blue and Bam!, you feel like your home again.

Try LXDE it looks more like Win 95/98/ME. I got LXDE, and a Windows 7 applet for cinnamon with 13 themes that make it look complete. Now I also am using the clasic 95 icons for LXDE and the Luna theme and the Wiin 7 GTK2 theme, but the one thing I am missing is the Windows 95 start buttion icon. All the ones I have are to small and don't come close on Cinnamon or LXDE. My panels are at 30 pixels high. I also have Wine, Playonlinux, and Vineyard installed. I might get Celega to if you guys think it is worth my time. Does anyone know how the open source clone of Windows 8's metero is doing? I know that it works on Delibian, but it does not work on Ubuntu based disros yet, just like CDE and Open CDE.

I've found that when I setup a senior citizen with a Linux box from their old fixed income computer that cannot afford groceries or medications. Let alone upgrade ram or processor speed. I first shoe horn a Linux install that fits that users hardware. Anything from Slitaz, to Vector Linux, to AntiX, to Puppy Linux or Low system requirement Mint minimal or Ubuntu minimal or Debian Stable Net install.

That Icewm Window Manager with SpaceFM or Rox File Manager Desktop or idesk with xfe with custom Taskbar and Icons can soothe
the child like mind set of some senior citizens.
