Alcatel USB modem not recognized on Mint 14

Post by maXmo »

Installed mint 14.1 mate 32bit and tried to get access to internet via alcatel one touch x220s usb 3g modem, but it wasn't recognized. The problem is that without internet one can't google for solution, so this hinders usability of mint. I followed general guidelines on the internet on how to switch the modem, but to no awail, as it turned out that usb_modeswitch already switched the modem, but usbserial module still was missing in the output of lsmod. modprobe on the device did load usbserial module and I was able to create internet connection. Whose responsibility is to load usbserial module? In dmesg output before I loaded usbserial there's an entry about segfault in usb_modeswitch:
[ 7002.879323] scsi 10:0:0:0: >Direct-Access ALCATEL Mass Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
[ 7002.881009] sd 10:0:0:0: >Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
[ 7002.883895] sd 10:0:0:0: >[sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
[ 7004.637728] usb_modeswitch_[3545]: segfault at 0 ip b75d3ee1 sp bfcf599c error 4 in libc-2.15.so[b7556000+1a3000]

Is it the source of the problem? After the usbserial module was loaded all logs are ok. I'm installing updates and will see if the problem persists after reboot.

dmesg before loading usbserial with modprobe:

Re: Alcatel USB modem not recognized on Mint 14

Too bad, after update and reboot the problem is still there. If the usbserial module is not preloaded, usb_modeswitch segfaults and modem is not recognized.

Code: Select all

Simple preloading of the module doesn't work either, it should be loaded specifically for this device. I created an udev rule:

Code: Select all

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="1bbb", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0017", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1bbb product=0x0017"
and now it works.
