Mirror Selection Speed Improvement

Postby SilverNexus » Sat Jul 13, 2013 12:53 am

I was waiting for the mirror selection list in Software Manager to run through its pinging of all the mirrors (no quick task on mediocre internet) and had a thought on how to speed up the mirror selection process:

If the mirror takes more than a specific amount of time to respond (e.g. 2-3 times the time it took for the fastest mirror to respond), then the ping request should be timed out and the next mirror should be evaluated. That way it reduces the time spent in evaluating mirrors that are too slow to even consider, except in the most masochistic of circumstances. I, for one, have no intention of selecting a mirror that runs at one tenth the speed of the fastest mirror available.
They say that a three-year old can use Windows 8. I say that's a bit of a regression. When I was three, I could use DOS.

A computer without Windows is like a fish without a bicycle.
