[SOLVED] Is printing broken in LMDE 201303?

Post by rlindau »

I thought I should post a summary. My great thanks to Monsta for walking me thru the analysis / fix.

Problem symptoms:
1. When I right-click - properties for a printer, I get an error popup "Option 'printer-resolution' has value '(unknown IPP tag)' and cannot be edited" before the properties display comes up.
2. When I "Print Test Page" from the properties panel, I get an "idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed" printer status, my print job shows as "stopped" in the document print status display, and nothing prints.

Here are the results from Monsta's analysis / guidance
1. The "unknown IPP tag" is just a warning and can be ignored (will presumably go away when an update pack containing a newer python-cups comes out)
2. The print failure was caused by a missing library (not clear why it was missing in the first place). To fix, reinstall the package:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgs9

i have LMDE 64 mate and a networked LBP6300dn.

After a LOT of fiddling around, following a s**tload of guides and topics on various forums, now CUPS doesn't give me the pdftop error anymore. Now it just says "ready to print", and marks all my ended jobs as succesfully printed  .

I've loaded the 6300n ppd, installed it via the CUPS web interface (it recognized succesfully the lan printer).

Now i don't know what to do anymore. Could you please help me trying the new python-cups you keep mentioning? Or trying other stuff..

i solved the problem applying the installation istructions from driver docs, but using the 6300 ppd instead of the 6300n one.

Not sure if this falls into the same exact issue as the OP but I just did a new install last week and was just now getting around to adding my network printer. Much to my surprise I cannot find the printer application at all to add any type of printer. What do I need to install to get this application back?

TIA

Do you mean system-config-printer? Check if the package with the same name is installed.

Yes, that was it!! And it was not installed. Not sure if it got removed while I was adding/removing applications. Is this a known issue that system-config-printer is not installed by default in LMDE?

After adding the printer, I make it to the very last configuration window where you input a name for the printer and it will not go past the "Apply" button. The button is active and can be pressed but nothing is applied.

Thanks for your help.

Hmm, I can't recall such an issue. Maybe it's just my memory.

Try running system-config-printer from the terminal and see if any error messages show up in the console (and post them here).

Here is what worked.
system-config-printer v 1.3.7(scp137) did not give the make/model choice that I found in the cups web interface.

I had to browse CUPS, localhost:631, where the make/model choices allowed me to choose
HP Photosmart 5520 Series, hpcups 3.12.6
the hpijs model gave the same errors as from scp137 so apparently that is what scp137 called hplip and chose beforehand.

There is a problem with scp137.

I guess those 8 yrs I used Slackware paid off.

I have just moved to LMDE from Ubuntu 10.04. I installed to a new HDD and was able to reboot back into U10.04. The document printed just fine in U10.04, system-config-printer 1.2.0.

So... what is the problem now? I got a bit confused by your post :)

Got the same problem. I have LMDE 201303 installed on tow different systems with three printers, that are connected through USB. Neither of them is working. Working through the hints in this thread in forced the re installation of libgs9. This however had no effect, the same error message still persisted.

Code: Select all

gs: error while loading shared libraries: libgs.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I could get rid of that problem by manually adding a link:

Code: Select all

ln -s libgs.so.9.05 libgs.so
This will get rid of the error, but printing out on a USB connected printer still does not work. Printing to a PDF however works with this fix (was not possible before). I tested different methods of printing also from the console.
The problem "Option 'printer-resolution' has value '(unknown IPP tag)' and cannot be edited." could be resolved by forceably installing a newer version of python-cups, which however will break other things, when done in isolation.
Besides this thread I consulted these locations:
- http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=21902
- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862413
- http://notthenineoclockblog.wordpress.com/2013/05/29/fix-broken-printing-in-linux-mint-debian-edition-lmde/

Changing debug to 1 in /etc/foomatic/filter.conf should store the generated *.ps file and a foomatic-rip.log file in the tmp directory. However I only get the PostScript file.
I was thinking about to use gutenprint instead, but have no idea how to configure it, so gutenprint is used.

Does anyone has any further ideas, what can be tried?

Weird. Check that reinstallation went fine and there are both libgs.so.9 and libgs.so.9.05 in the /usr/lib dir (the first file is the symlink to the second).
BTW, your manual symlink may cause some problems in the future when a new libgs (version 10, probably) appears.

Check the logs for any error messages (like shown in this post).

What exactly does it break?

EDIT: out of curiosity I've checked all four LMDE ISOs and found out that libgs9 package is damaged (i.e. libgs.so.9 and libgs.so.9.05 are missing) only in MATE 64-bit edition. This thread's title is very precise, yeah :) The other three editions are fine, so reinstalling that package probably won't do any good there.

I did check the log. The only occurrence of error is in the context of "no errors" :(

Don't remember it in detail. I think it was something to do with attribute that prohibited finding the correct printer.

Hmm, now I'm out of clues, especially with this fact:
hotzst wrote:I have LMDE 201303 installed on tow different systems with three printers, that are connected through USB. Neither of them is working.
BTW, are they all from the same vendor, or from the different ones?

I can also suggest trying them in Debian Wheezy. If they work there, then the problem may be in some other printing-related package we missed.

Two are Brother of the HL series and one is a Canon Pixma MG. This one requires additional drivers, but that should not matter.
Monsta wrote:I can also suggest trying them in Debian Wheezy. If they work there, then the problem may be in some other printing-related package we missed.
I tested it with Mint KDE 14, but will follow up with a test run with Debian Wheezy.

First of all Thank you !!!!!

This solved part of my problem.
Evince is now capable of printing.
Printing from mozilla is extremely slow.

I was typing that printing under mozilla was not possible when the print came out the printer. It took about 10 to 15 minutes to print.

For testing and comparision I wil print the forums page in monochrome on my printer (kyocera KM-C4035 KPDL-driver) and take the time necessary for the print to get out of the printer.
By the way KPDL stands for Kyocera page discription language which is a postscript 3 emulator.
Is there an way to use the KX-drivers in a ppd-file? (hp-pcl5e and pcl6) they seem to be better/faster.

The page I printed is : http://forums.linuxmint.com/index.php. It took 7 minutes to get out of the printer.
Maybe someone can test this to and put his printing time for comparison. I would like to know if this slow performance is the printer-driver combination or more system related.

Thanks, Gerard

Just installed LMDE 201303 MATE 64-bit on my ACER 4810T
after installing my networked HP Laserjet4P printer i would get error:

"no profiles specified in PPD"

after trying to print. After looking at this thread I tried:

# apt-get install --reinstall libgs9

worked for me. Now printing appears fixed - thanks!

I had the same printing problem with LMDE 201303 MATE 64-bit RC, even after installing all new available updates now in September 2013.
The libgs9 reinstallation solved the problem.

I'm using Mint XFCE and I have faced with similar problem.

Code: Select all

unable to open print file /var/spool/d00001-001 - No such file or directory
Only way to fix this is changing ipp:// to ipp14://

I know that this topic is solved, but if someone can't fix this error, than maybe applying this will help.
