wifi problem

Hello

Today I installed Linux Mint 15 on my laptop, my first linux experience, so I'm still a newbie in this. I've got it working properly but I got some problems with my wireless connection. When I still got windows 7 I've got good internet connection everywhere in the house, but now I've got on some places no internet connection, but the icon shows internet connection and 60-65%. The wierd part is, if I close my laptop and I open it again, I've got internet for about 10 secs and then firefox/chrome can't load pages anymore but the icon still shows that I'm connected. If I disable the wireless connection with my keyboard, the icon still shows I'm connected while I can't load internet pages. When I sit closer to the router the internet works again and when I sit next to the router it shows 75% connection while in windows 7 it would be 100%.
Can someone help me to fix this problem? If I need to give more info, please tell so.

This morning I did some more testing and researching. When I'm in my room I've got internet connection for about 1min and then it doesn't work anymore (firefox doesn't load pages anymore) while the icon still shows I'm connected. When I disconnect and reconnect via 'network settings' I have internet connection for again 1min, etc.

Maybe I've got an outdated wireless driver so I downloaded the latest driver from [url]http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=272&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true[/url], but I don't know how to install it :/.
I've read the readme but I don't understand it.

You can enter top-level directory of driver and execute follwing command to
Compile, Installation, or uninstall the driver:

1. Change to Super User
sudo su

2. Compile driver from the source code
make

3. Install the driver to the kernel
make install
reboot

4. uninstall driver
make uninstall

Can someone help me to install it?

Non of those drivers listed appear to support the 3.8 series kernel so I don't think it will work.

Can you paste back the output of inxi -Fxz so we can have a look at your configuration

Unfortunately you have a problematic wifi adapter.

I would try doing a full upgrade to get to kernel 3.8.0-26 and see if that helps any.

The only other solution that I can think of is purchasing a $20.00 usb wifi dongle and save yourself a lot of headaches.

The driver you already downloaded from Realtek's website might work fine, even though it does not claim to support 3.8. At least on 13/14 with the 3.2 or 3.5 kernel, it can still be installed. Please try installing this driver anyway.

Please extract the .tar file (it is an archive like ZIP), and go to the folder where you extracted it. Then please right-click inside that folder > Open in Terminal.
In that terminal you can run these commands to install the driver:

But now with Mint 15, most users of the RTL8188CE don't have much trouble with their device. Thanks for the clear instruction, but when I do it gives some errors and it doesn't work. Both commands give the same output.

@WharfRat: I rather first try to fix this instead of buying an usb dongle. And I don't understand what you're saying to do a full upgrade to get to kernel 3.8.0-26. I'm still learning to get familiar with linux.

Ok, that doesn't work indeed. Let's try another one.

Please download and extract this package: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel ... 618.tar.xz
Then right-click inside the folder where you extracted it, as you usually do with drivers, and run these commands (note, it's a little different):

Then please reboot. You have now installed a newer version of the default driver, from a package which contains the latest Linux driver developments that have not reached any Mint releases yet.

Note that I'll be on vacation from Friday on, so I hope we get this fixed soon.

Dunno if it's a problem that it couldn't read the private key.

Also there are 2 routers in the house with the same name, so that you don't have to reconnect when you move through the house. When I'm sitting between them, the connection strenght variables (varieert) alot and sometimes the internet goes very slow. In w7 i didn't have that problem.

Last thing, when I sit next to the router and I hoover over the icon of the connection it shows 56% and when I click on it, it says 87%. It seems to me that the icon isn't always 'up to date', I had that also when to connection failed, it still showed that I'm connected.

The private key problem can certainly be fixed, but it appears the driver is already installed at you since internet was working better for you.

Make sure the DHCP for your second router is turned off, otherwise as you transition between coverage areas it expects to change your internal IP address for each router. Consider having each router set to broadcast on a different channel that is 4 or 5 away from the first. Having both on the same channel can create a dead zone or weak zone in the mid area between them since their signals will be hitting each other on the same frequency.

Spearmint2, routers only assign a new IP address if the computer sends a DHCP request, so a change of IP address won't come unexpected to the computer - likely he just keeps using the same IP when moving to another router. His problem is that internet is slow, not that the connection fails because of IP problems.

Checking the channels that the routers use can indeed help, and that was something I hadn't thought of yet.

DHCP is turned off, and they use different channels.

Speedtest.net gives me normal downloadspeeds but I feel that it's still slower then normal. Tomorrow I will check the downloadspeed by downloading some files and compare it to what I got with w7.

This morning I wanted to boot my laptop but it freezes after the linux mint logo that gets brighter. I see my mouse in the middle of the screen but I can't move it. Also, I can set my screen brighter or less brighter but nothing more. It goes even in stand-by when I do nothing for 5 min. I can also reboot it with 'Alt+SysRq+B'.
I tried it several times to reboot, even tried to boot in recovery mode but nothing helps. Should I make a new topic about it in the boot section? Or can someone help me here?

Not sure what you are going through. All I can do is relate what I needed to do this morning.

I ran my eeepc 701 till the battery died and that caused a improper shutdown.
Booting was impossible after that on my internal SSD hard drive.

I had to break out my live usb. Open Gparted. Find my internal SSD. Right clicked it and told
Gparted to run a check on the drive. I am posting now from that fixed boot problem on my eeepc 701.

Can you still boot the computer in Recovery Mode? If you get to the recovery menu, please choose the "resume" option using up/down keys and Enter.

I did that, but it didn't work. I will try it again, but now I did a memtest86+ and it is still busy

When memtest completes it will write a 1 instead of 0 under Pass, and it will start over again. This way it might seem to run eternally. But you can just exit memtest (by pressing the key to reboot as specified at the bottom) when it's at 1 pass with no errors reported.

No errors with the memtest. I did also the recovery mode and it didn't work. It still freezes after the linux mint logo.
