Am I expecting to much Mint Mate 15 Old PC

Post by Dyslexic1 »

Hi I have been using Mint for three weeks now, was using Mint cinnamon but keep getting crashing into Fallback Mode. From chat was told about Mint MATE for been using that.

Computer seems very slow at time can't run video from Vimeo with HD turned off. I got 3gb ram in and did try a GeForce 6200 but didn't get working.
Also slow on youtube and a number of other site none video. I used update manager and also read about there no defrag and after only three weeks!

So am I trying to polish a turd?

Edit: crashing was on Cinnamon not on MATE.

Card I got installed

I'm running Mint 15 MATE on an older HP nc6400 laptop, Core Duo 1.86GH, 2GB of RAM w/533MHz bus speed, 120GB hard drive and it runs fast as can be. No problems with it crashing or anything. YouTube runs well, heck, anything I want to do runs well. I'd check over your hardware or do a reinstall so you'll start with a clean op system and see if that'll help.

Thanks TNFrank can you play videos on Vimeo? that with HD off

Probably drivers problems and flash problems but your CPU is slow by today standards.

Use the top command to find out what is using your CPU when the computer feels slow.

I'm running MATE on an Acer netbook...

I know I could use a lighter DE, but honestly, I can't say the experience is terrible...It's fairly decent and I prefer MATE.
I tried MATE on an older Dell laptop...sputtered a bit with MATE, then decided to go LXDE...

Have you looked in additional drivers to see if you are using an nvidia driver for your card??

Edit: post more detail about your machines spec's and you'll get better suggestions/recommendations - make/model/processor etc.

You must have a driver issue. I run Mint 15 Mate on my Samsung N150 netbook, since release [Atom n450 single core, 2GB RAM, some crappy intel video chipset]. I can watch fullscreen youtube up to 720p and 720p mkv's. No issues whatsoever.

At this point I recommend reinstalling fresh using Mint with Mate.
