Odd data burst and screen flicker on boot

Post by robert-e »

An odd thing has started happening about 2 or 3 weeks ago. When I cold boot, everything seems normal; the desktop (mint 13 mate 64 bit) icons come up, and the mouse is active. This is when it gets strange: If I mouse over any icon (not clicking it), the screen blanks for about a half second, then comes back. That in itself is not an issue, but at the same time I see a data burst on the lan network cable connector light. Only one time per boot. I would run etherape to see what is going on, but that would be too late. Has anyone had this happen? Darn, I hate things going on behind my back.

Oh yes, I am using the Nvidia prop driver, but that has been installed for over a year before this started.

Regards,
Bob

To narrow down the possibilities, unplug the LAN cable and reboot. Does the probably still occur? If it does then you can stop worrying about gremlins attacking you via the LAN.

Yes, I think I will try that, although a couple of short flashes of light on the lan cable connection does not yeild a whole lot of information. I might have to set etherape to start on boot, or else get out my old linksys router and set up logging on that. I just have to get off my lazy old butt. The only reason I posted is that the phenomena is recent in the last few weeks, making me wonder what changed. I did another check, and it only occurs when a desktop icon is "moused over". It does not occur when the bar at the screen bottom is "moused over". I imagine that points to something associated with the desktop. Never-the-less, I find it odd. I did check the old dlink router, but it is pretty brain dead and does not log much at all.

Best regards,
Bob
