[SOLVED] Strange flash video LM15

Post by tamas.karacsony »

Hi!

I have a problem with playing flash video on ffox. I attached a screenshot.
Sound is good but video is half-sized, strange coloured.
Linux is fresh install, up-to-date. I tried several flash plugins, mint-flashplugin 10.3, then 11, adobe-flashplugin, all the same result.
I have tried with chromium, with the same result.
Without any plugin installed some of the youtube videos can be seen with HTML5, without any problem.

I ran out of ideas...

Normal video playing (video files on hard disk) with Videos (Totem) is absoult perfect.

I do not know what kind of other information needed, I am very new on linux.

Thanks in advance!
Tamas

I collected some information from the system, maybe these are useful:

karacsonyt@kts-pc ~ $ inxi -F
System: Host: kts-pc Kernel: 3.8.0-19-generic i686 (32 bit) Desktop: N/A Distro: Linux Mint 15 Olivia
Machine: Mobo: MICRO-STAR model: MS-6580 version: 20A Bios: American Megatrends version: V3.4 11 date: 11/14/2002
CPU: Single core Intel Pentium 4 CPU (-UP-) cache: 512 KB flags: (sse sse2) clocked at 2806.280 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device
X.Org: 1.13.3 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1280x1024@60.0hz

I use the default environment come with LM15.

I just did a fresh install of linux mint 15, ran the updates, and I am having the exact same issue. Never had this problem with older versions of Mint on this machine before.

Thanks nomko, but I think my chipset is a bit old for this.
It is an Intel 845GE and it is not listed on VA-API supported list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Acceleration_API#Supported_hardware_and_drivers)
If you get an error (for example "Failed to open VDPAU backend"), either your graphics card doesn't support VA-API (since this VDPAU driver requires VA-API) or you've missed a step from the instructions above.

Sounds like the Bug affecting certain Intel Chipsets with Kernel 3.8.0-19 (maybe related to incorrect setting of color depth). Options to try:

1. On an flash video r-click and in the dialogue box that opens un-check Enable Video Acceleration. (restart browser and try again)

or

2. Install Mint13 LTS which has an older kernel that may work.

or

3. The workaround in post #1 of the bug report involves
creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
Restart X (reboot, restart your display manager, whatever). Colors are back to the way they used to be and flash works.

Pat, you're a genious. :-)
I generated a xorg.conf file, edited it as it was supposed, reboot X and ... it works like a charm. :-)
Thank you again!

Hi Tamas> You give me too much credit - someone else made the solution and I only copied it for you. Sure you would have found it on your own searching eventually. Glad it is working for you now.

Are you sure you have to create it - maybe it already exists. Can you post the output from these commands in a terminal (use copy/paste):

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

inxi -F

Hi kkoz83> Confirmed that you do not already have the file and the kernel/card combination is a candidate for this change.

On a side note you may want to update inxi as newer versions give better information such as your Desktop (instead of N/A). This update is not done through Synaptic but rather as a root user in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -U
Now onto the xorg.conf file...(you can replace gedit with whatever your editor is)
Open the Terminal, and type "gksu gedit" [enter]. It will ask for your password; type it, then press [enter].

In the text editor that pops up, enter this exactly as shown:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Save the file in /etc/X11 with the name "xorg.conf". Exit both the text editor and the terminal, and restart your computer. You should now see the correct video, in an acceleration mode the 865G understands.
Quoted from here.

Thanks Pat, it works for the Intel 82852 graphics card too!
By the way, making the xorg.conf file in a folder without the command line, go to the folder, right click on the folder and click on 'open as administrator', in the folder right click on white space, hover over 'create document', click 'create empty file' and name the file xorg.conf. Right click the file and select 'open with text editor'.
