Linux Mint 15 boots to GRUB prompt on W7 install (Solved)

Post by EmergencySalad »

Hi, I am quite new to Linux, and I am having some trouble with getting my x64 LM15 to run on my Windows 7 dual-boot.

From what I know, the initial installation of the x64 Olivia worked fine, but rebooted to W7 immediately. I then added Olivia to the Windows boot menu through EasyBCD (the program recognized it on my 95 GB partition just fine) and rebooted. Linux Mint showed up, but upon selecting it, it booted to a GRUB command line interface with 'grub4dos' on the top left corner. I've tried reinstalling GRUB2 through a chroot to my installation, but to no avail; it still boots to the command line, and I cannot get it to boot past that. The liveUSB I've been using works perfectly fine, with no errors to my knowledge.

If it helps in any way whatsoever, my system has no RAID system utilized.

What exactly does "boot to the command line" mean? Do you mean a grub prompt, or you get your regular login, but the X Window System does not start?

Can you post your /var/log/boot.log, and your grub.cfg files?

What I mean is just the GRUB prompt, I don't see any part of the regular log in.

Can you also post your fstab as well as the output from:

Code: Select all

ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
Also I need the boot.log from the actual environment. The one you posted looks to be for the live cd. You will need to mount your root partition in the live environment to extract this.

Thanks

When I'd have this happen, my Windows MBR somehow had gotten broken, so GRUB didn't know where LM was relative to Windows or something. I used Windows Recovery Console to issue

Code: Select all

bootrec /fixmbr
then I used a LM Live DVD to fix Grub.

When I mount my root partition, there's no boot.log underneath the /var/log directory. I have a file named just 'boot' that has no contents besides: "(Nothing has been logged yet.)"

fstab:

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a

# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

To get to the recovery console, you press f8 to open 'advanced boot options' over Windows 7, go to repair your computer, then open the command line within those options, right? I just want to confirm.

Nux, I did what you recommended, and now Mint is booting like a charm (through the GRUB bootloader now)! Thank you very much!
