Cant get 4od to work on Chromium or Firefox - SOLVED -

Post by TuftyDave »

I can't get 4od to stream at all either on Chromium or Firefox....

I looked on the web & found others with same probs. Tried some advice:-

rm ~/.adobe -rf

Install hal & hal-info:
sudo apt-get install hal hal-info

Reinstall adobe player:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer --reinstall

Still no joy...

BBC iplayer works fine.

Anyone else with this problem?

When you say it doesn't work what actually happens?

Does the website actually load properly but the Flash player won't load?

I've been on 4OD a few weeks back and everything worked fine apart from getting an error loading the video but seemed to be a problem their end as I had the same problem on my Android app, think it's fixed now though.

EDIT: Nope, just got this error again:

Just tried on my browser (Firefox) and it's not working for me either, I installed Hal but it didn't make a difference. Strange.

It's working for me as I type this running firefox in maya mate 64bit. :D

I did have problems some months ago with an error, but unfortunately can't remember exactly what solved it - maye something to do with resetting flash in an adobe website???

Hal certainly rings bells as well. However I 'think' it was the website reset thing that fixed mine at least - I was dubious, but it did the trick.

I'm still a noob so don't know where to point you further, but if you want any commands run to see what I have installed etc. I'd be pleased to help.

Thanks guys,
Looks like I'm not the only one then, that's a good start....
But looks like we all got different systems/configurations, so not so easy to pinpoint.

I'm 64 bit Mint Olivia 15 with Cinnamon

I had other video related problems, but thought I'd solved them all.
BBCI player works fine and ITV player works fine.

It's only 4OD that doesn't show any videos, when you try to watch LIVE TV you get further, and it plays an advert, but as the live streaming attempts to start there is an error message, something about DRM error, but it disappears too quickly for me to read it all...

When I try to watch any catch-up TV the screen draws just fine, but there is simply no video at all, the space where the video should appear is just blank, no flash-player comes up, nothing, just a blank space.

I've just tested chromium on my setup & that's working too!

I suspect that's only because I don't use it much at all as the ads really p*** me off. When I had a mate round & actually wanted to watch something with him of course it didn't want to play ball.... poxxy DRM... & they wonder why people pirate..... anyway back on topic

I've had a quick google to try & jog my memory but when I had problems the player gave me a specfic error code which helped to narrow things down.

This page looks quite hopeful http://stevesfixitshop.blogspot.co.uk/2013_06_01_archive.html

I definately do remember trying this adobe test video http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html
Scroll down to 'Test protected video content playback using the demo player' & copy the link into the player as instructed. You should see a video of a train if it works.

As I said previously I thought I remembered some sort of license reset or something on an official adobe page but I can't find anything now...

Good luck,

Charles.

Hi and thanks for replies...
However I now don't think this is just a Linux problem.
I've tried 4od catch-up on all my computers with three different operating systems and it doesn't work (exact same blank screen with everything else drawn perfectly) on ANY of them!

I actually think my ISP might be blocking the ip address for the stream for some unknown reason...

So I'm going to ask them first....

UPDATE...
There were two different problems here,,,,
One is that my router was blocking access to 4od video. Once sorted I can now get 4od on all of my other platforms and OS's except Linux Mint.
The second problem is now ONLY a linux problem & that is that I'm still getting the 'Digital Rights Error (3322)'
I've tried everything I can but don't seem able to get past this error...

Any more ideas?

We at least we're making progress :D

Have you tried the link from this 4od site?

http://www.channel4.com/4viewers/faq/name/digital-rights-3322/id/502974174

I think 3222 was the error I used to get & this looks suspiciously like that reset thing I was reminded of.
I don't understand what it does or why its neccessary but it seemed to do the trick for me.

Then I suggest you try the test video from my previous reply.

Fingers crossed

Hi all. I'm still a noob with linux so please forgive me if something doesn't make sense but I was having this exact problem on Mint 15 with firefox/chromium and 4od (BBC iplayer etc were all working fine) but I've finally got it to work. This is what I did (close browsers down first):

4od originally was just displaying the loading symbol but not going through to the video so I followed the steps on the ubuntu forums http://askubuntu.com/questions/199113/4od-uk-cant-stream. First I removed the cache:

Code: Select all

rm ~/.adobe -rf
then installed libhal and hal info

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install hal hal-info
then reinstalled flash

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer --reinstall
This solved the loading problem but then I was getting the DRM error message. I wasn't sure whether it was an error with hal so I ran:

Code: Select all

sudo rm -r /etc/hal
then

Code: Select all

sudo ln -sn /usr/share/hal /etc/hal
This still didn't fix anything so I cleared all the adobe directories with:

Code: Select all

cd ~/.adobe/Flash_Player
then

Code: Select all

rm -rf NativeCache AssetCache APSPrivateData2
That fixed it. It seems to be a common problem with certain content providers in UK and US. This blog has what seems to be a similar problem - the steps there didn't solve it for me but led me to think it's not really a problem with hal so the middle steps might not be necessary: http://stevesfixitshop.blogspot.co.uk/2013_06_01_archive.html

Hope this helps!

silberston thank you....
Combinations of the items in your last post solved the problem.
Thanks again.

Hello, new to LInux and Mint.
I tried the fix suggested by silberston above, but have run into a few problems.
When I type
rm ~/.adobe -rf
nothing appears in the terminal. Has it worked?
I then tried :

sudo apt-get install hal hal-info

but get the following response:

Package hal is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
hal-info

Then tried
sudo apt-get install hal-info
But apparently the newest version of hal is installed.
Reinstalled flash using the suggested command line, with no change to the 4od problem. I'm a bit stuck now, any suggestions?
The problem with 4od is that it just shows the loading circle endlessly, does not even play adverts.
Thanks!

This probably isn't of interest, or at all useful, but, just for info's sake.. I was just about to start looking into trying to get this working on my box when I got an email from xbox telling me that you no longer need a Gold membership to use streaming apps, so I now view 4OD on the xbox with a standard free membership.

Definately not a solution, but, for anyone with an xbox and no gold membership it's a whole lot less hassle.
