cant install programs via apt-get

Post by adrienkennebec »

Whenever I try to install a program i get this error message:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
eggdrop : Depends: eggdrop-data (= 1.6.19-1.2ubuntu5) but it is not going to be installed
wine : Depends: wine1.4 but it is not going to be installed
wine1.4-common : Depends: wine1.4 (= 1.4.1-0ubuntu1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I tried apt-get install -f install and then tried again. but it still wont work downloading anything.

Anyone know how to fix this?

You probably don't have a solid interenet connection, and the download was incomplete. Are you attempting this with a wireless connection?

The -f switch is a command to finish" the incomplete install. The proper syntax for it is: sudo apt-get -f install [package-name-you're-installing]. Plus it's always a good idea to sudo apt-get update, before trying to install anything. Have you done that? See if that makes a difference and report back.

And then i tried to install the programs with sudo apt-get -f install, but got the same errors. also I'm on a wired connection now.

OK...well, sorry, but we've gone beyond my level of knowledge. Could be that the Ubuntu repo's are down at the moment, or at least some of them are not available. That's the best I can offer right now...hopefully someone with more insight will come along shortly and fill in the blanks.

These ppas failed because they don't exist.

there's no ppa for Quantal
https://launchpad.net/~gwibber-team/+archive/ppa

Same for here
http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwibber-daily/ ... ntu/dists/

I would comment out that ppa in sources list or uncheck it in the other tab in your software sources . Then run sudo apt-get update again in the terminal.

Okay, i tried removing those from my sources list, then run sudo apt-get update and it updated without errors. But then i tried sudo apt-get -f install again and it gave me these errors:

This shouldn't be there.
Please post the output of:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sr

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy libwine-unstable
BTW, please use the "code" tag this time, things pasted from the terminal look much better with it.

The repos look alright. Now you just need to remove libwine-unstable:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge libwine-unstable
Where did you get that package, BTW?

From apt-get. It mustve got installed when I was trying to install wine.

I tried "sudo apt-get remove --purge libwine-unstable" and got this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge libwine-unstable
[sudo] password for chris:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

libwine-alsa-unstable : Depends: libwine-unstable (= 1.5.5-0.1) but it is not going to be installed
libwine-bin-unstable : Depends: libwine-unstable (= 1.5.5-0.1) but it is not going to be installed
libwine-oss-unstable : Depends: libwine-unstable (= 1.5.5-0.1) but it is not going to be installed
libwine-sane-unstable : Depends: libwine-unstable (= 1.5.5-0.1) but it is not going to be installed
wine : Depends: wine1.4 but it is not going to be installed
wine1.4-common : Depends: wine1.4 (= 1.4.1-0ubuntu1) but it is not going to be installed

Wow. Where did you get all this? These packages are not in the Ubuntu repos. You must have added some unreliable PPA...
Anyway, I'd remove them all then try to remove libwine-unstable once more.
