I installed variety to cycle through my wallpapers and I am finding that images that are larger than my screen resolution aren't getting scaled down anymore. I can't find anything in the settings panel to set that up. Is there a setting in a configuration file that I can use for this?

I figured it out and am posting this to help anyone else. I installed dconf editor and drilled down to org.mate.background and set the picture-options value to scaled. Now everything looks good.

Under Mint 16, open dconf Editor and go to org.mate.desktop.background. Look for picture-options
