Mint 13: AMD/ATI graphics drivers & Cinnamon problem [solved

Post by aneurysm1985 »

I recently did a system update using Update Manager, and downloaded all of the recommended updates. Now my system is behaving strangely.

The three main problems, that I can see are:
  • By default, Cinnamon is not the interface that launches with Mint 13 on startup. Instead GNOME/GNOME fallback mode is showing with just 'Applications' and 'Places' listed. Like this.
  • The monitor resolution changed to low-res, with my two monitors mirroring each other. Previously, they were two separate workspaces.
  • In general, my proprietary AMD/ATI graphics drivers seem to have stopped working.
My problem sounds very similar to what was described in this recent forum post.

What I have tried to fix it:
I have tried uninstalling the AMD/ATI drivers using this method. I then rebooted, but no 'additional drivers' are showing in that Mint application. Usually the proprietary AMD/ATI drivers are listed there.

Some outputs, which might help you diagnose the problem

Could someone please step me through fixing this problem on my machine. My main problem seems to be that the AMD/ATI drivers aren't loading properly, or even being listed as an option in 'additional drivers'.

edit: I should note that my system is currently always loading in GNOME, even if I use the 'Session' options screen to manually choose 'Cinnamon' when I log into Mint 13.
edit2: Is this post in the right board: 'Cinnamon'? Half of the problem relates to Cinnamon, the other half relates to the ATI graphics card drivers.

This line from your inxi -Fxz is not good.
GLX Renderer: N/A GLX Version: N/A Direct Rendering: N/A

I have a very similar system to yours with a Gigabyte mother-board, quad-core AMD and Mint 13 (on one partition).
Here is my Mint 13 system.
$ inxi -b
System: Host: Skynet1 Kernel: 3.12.0-031200-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 13 Maya
Machine: Mobo: Gigabyte model: GA-A75-UD4H version: x.x Bios: Award version: F2 date: 06/08/2011
CPU: Quad core AMD A8-3870 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) clocked at 3000.00 MHz
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek [Radeon HD 6550D]
X.Org: 1.11.3 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: vesa,fbdev) Resolution: 1600x1200@85.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD SUMO GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4

You are using the 3.2 kernel. I had plenty of problems with my Mint 13 with that kernel. The 3.12 kernel works much better. You can install that with Synaptic. Enable the backports first.
Open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Backports > Refresh

I am not saying that this will cure your current problems, but it is a step in the right direction.

You can see from my specs that I have the default Gallium instead of flgrx. That is working fine for me. Also, I have installed all the latest 1, 2, and 3 level updates in Mint 13 with no problems.

I don't mean to belittle your current problems, but if I were faced with those problems, I would dump Mint 13 and install Mint 16. Believe me, it may be a big chore, but your hardware would function much better. On Mint 16 I easily installed the flgrx-update and have direct rendering.

Here is my Mint 16 system (on a different partition).

Thanks for all of that information.

I have been sticking with Mint 13, since Mint 17 is only about 4 months away, and that will be LTS. Will consider upgrading to Mint 16 if I can't find a solution soon.

Could someone provide me with instructions for rolling back to kernel 3.12? I haven't been able to find suitable instructions online.

PS: in Synaptic's "Kernels and modules" section, I am only seeing packages labelled "linux-image-3.11.0.xxxxx", "linux-image-3.2.0.xxxxx", "linux-image-3.5.0.xxxxx" or "linux-image-3.8.0.xxxxx". I can't see 3.12.0.xxxx listed anywhere...

The 3.11.0.xxxxx kernel should work just fine.
BTW, you are not "rolling back". The 3.11 is newer than 3.2 - just as 11 is more than 2
That is a strange way to number, but that is the way they do it...

Oh yes, thanks for advising about the numbering scheme!

So should I mark 3.11.0 "for installation" and mark 3.2.0 "for removal"? In the one action? Or do it as separate actions? This is my first time doing such a thing through Synaptic.

PS: I am getting a warning that I am "about to install software that can't be authenticated".

Do not mark 3.2 for removal. It doesn't hurt anything to have more than one installed. It is the same as having more than one text editor or music player installed. You will only run one at a time, and you choose which one in the grub menu.
I am getting a warning that I am "about to install software that can't be authenticated".
The kernels in the backports have been tested by the Mint team for compatibility with Mint 16.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have helped my issues with Cinnamon/my graphics card.

Is there any way I can roll back to the way my computer was, say, 14 days ago. It was working fine until my System Update approx 7 days ago.

I am disappointed that that did not make things at least a little better.
Is there any new option listed in the Device Driver manager?
Is it still falling back to Gnome?

Yes it is still falling back to GNOME. The AMD/ATI drivers are still not appearing as options.

I am currently trying Mint 16 from a live USB. If that works fine, I may just format my HDD and start over with Mint 16.

Will report back here with updates.

Just so you know, with an AMD Radeon 4200, you won't be able to use FGLRX, AMD's proprietary driver, in Mint 16 because AMD ditched support for 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx cards after fglrx 12.6 (I think).

OK, so I updated from Mint 13 to Mint 16 Cinnamon, and the graphics issues which I described are not happening in the new OS.

So I guess we didn't 'solve' the original problem which was happening in Mint 13. But I am marking this thread as 'solved', as austin.texas's suggestion to upgrade did fix the problem. Thanks also to clfarron4 who pointed out that I don't need to install the AMD/ATI proprietary driver in Mint 16.
