Using Huawei E303 Mobile Device with LMDE UP8

Post by onliq »

I hoped, that UP8 will solve my problem - but it didn't: I try to connect my Huawei E303 Mobile Device to get a mobile broadband internet connection using LMDE UP8, but it does not work.

The device is recognized and according to dmesg a (useless) wwan0 interface is created.

Code: Select all

[ 2449.478974] usb 4-1.1: Product: Huawei E303 Mobile Device
[ 2449.478978] usb 4-1.1: Manufacturer: HUAWEI
[ 2449.478983] usb 4-1.1: SerialNumber: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
[ 2449.480849] usb-storage 4-1.1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
[ 2449.481398] scsi16 : usb-storage 4-1.1:1.0
[ 2450.035652] usb 4-1.1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usb-storage while 'usb_modeswitch' sets config #2
[ 2450.039395] cdc_mbim 4-1.1:2.0: cdc-wdm1: USB WDM device
[ 2450.039801] cdc_mbim 4-1.1:2.0 wwan0: register 'cdc_mbim' at usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1, CDC MBIM, 4a:1b:1e:24:f5:ab
If I list usb devices using usb-devices I get:

Code: Select all

T: Bus=04 Lev=02 Prnt=02 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 7 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=ff MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 2
P: Vendor=12d1 ProdID=1505 Rev=01.02
S: Manufacturer=HUAWEI
S: Product=Huawei E303 Mobile Device
S: SerialNumber=FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
C: #Ifs= 4 Cfg#= 2 Atr=a0 MxPwr=500mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=02(commc) Sub=0e Prot=00 Driver=cdc_mbim
I: If#= 1 Alt= 1 #EPs= 2 Cls=0a(data ) Sub=00 Prot=02 Driver=cdc_mbim
I: If#= 2 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
I: If#= 3 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
According to this, the device uses the cdc_mbim driver which seams not to be supported using the current modem and network manager.
Modem manager 1.0 states, that it added compabibility for mbim - but it does not appear to be available in the repositories for LMDE.

I think that this post http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... n0#p779780 is about quite the same problem - but the given solution does not work under LMDE.

Any Idea on how to get this working?

Side note 1: if I use an olther HUAWEI device without mbim support, it is correctly switched by usbmodeswitch and works correctly - but very slow. Thats why i want to get the new device up and running...
Side note 2: using lsusb the device shows up as E398, but same vendor and device id:

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 007: ID 12d1:1505 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398 LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard

This suggests that the problem already existed with UP7. I have an E303 (bought from amazon.de) which worked ootb, plug and play with UP7. I haven't tried with UP8 though because the E303 is rubbish (poor antenna) and mostly doesn't get any 3G-signal at all whereas my old E220 does (signal usually 50-58% in my office).

Yes, your assumption is right - the problem existed already on UP7. The device is what my provider ships for mobile broadband internet access. Thus I did not choose it myself, but would still be happy, if I could get it running...
