New member from Michigan
Hello all, I'm new to the forums here, and kind of new to Linux as well. I am an IT tech student, going for my bachelors degree. I look forward to learning all I can about Linux! My two favorite Linux distros are Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

Re: New member from Michigan
Thanks all! I am enjoying the world of Linux....it's taking a little getting used to, but I'm liking every minute! I already have Ubuntu up and running on an older Dell desktop. Now if I can get the brightness problem figured out on my laptop I'll be all set. I want to put Linux Mint on my laptop if possible.
Re: New member from Michigan
mint runs very well on dell machines, depending on its age and spec [if 5 yrs or less] try the cinamon edition if older then the mate edition, or if you prefer then use xfce
Re: New member from Michigan
The machine is from 2004. Would Mint in it's mate form run faster on there than Ubuntu? Which would I be better off with? The dell has 1 gb of RAM.
Re: New member from Michigan
I haven't used straight ubuntu for about 4 years, so cant comment on current comparative speeds, I can say i have a now 12 yr old acer [1.5 celeronM 1gb ] running mint with mate and it is still quicker than running xp when new. All i can recommend is give it a try
