I've realized that, unlike Ubuntu to which I'm used,in Mint 13 I have no mail at all in /var/mail/,the directory is actually empty.
Is this by default,or have I inadvertently stopped some service and/or removed some package?

Yes, /var/mail is empty. If you are using Thunderbird then your mail would be in .thunderbird in your home directory.

I should have specified that I was not referring to the actual mail client directory:I was thinking about the system messages like security warnings (like for instance wrong passwords),cron job reports and rkhunter reports that Ubuntu and Debian log to /var/mail/user and /var/mail/mail.

For those events look in /var/log.
