Boot failures in 13 persist in 17 (Chapter 1) - SOLVED

Post by norm.h »

The background to my problem is in the (edited) thread below.

Even after installing Mint 17 (see below for details) I was still getting intermittent boot failures, mostly overcome by rebooting, so I installed "nomodeset" into grub.

Yesterday I could only get in by resorting again to an external screen, but then I got the "display driver shutdown 6 times......." error which I couldn't overcome.
Finally I did another clean re-install of Mint 17 (Mate) 32 bit, left "nomodeset" out, but changed the " pam config "common-session" to "common-session-noninteractive" as suggested below.

This afternoon the laptop was sitting doing nothing, with the lid open.
Moving the mouse produced a blank screen, so I did REISUB to get back to login.

My other laptop, (also running Mint 17 installed from the same DVD), has no such problems.

Everything seems to point to some sort of a graphics issue, but what, and how to solve it?
FWIW: var/log/messages doesn't exist on either laptop

If it's any help:

From inxi -Fxz on the faulty laptop:

Can't get out of sleep mode SOLVED
by norm.h on Sat May 31, 2014

Running Linux Mint 13 (Mate) 32 bit.

For some time, I've had intermittent boot and shutdown hangs, which seemed to be overcome by adding "nomodeset" to grub, but since yesterday I only get the mbd splash, and then nothing but a blank screen, no login, nada.

I originally suspected a defective graphics chip, so in desperation connected laptop to an external monitor.
This got me to the login page, which I did successfully, but imediately after logging in got a message "entering sleep mode", and screen went blank.
In sleep mode the "computer on" indicator light should have been flashing, but it was steady.

Pressing Fn/F4 got the indicator light flashing and the power button light went out.
Pressing the power button again woke the laptop up, but imediately got the message "entering sleep mode", and screen went blank.

I'm now wondering if the laptop's screen is faulty, but until I can get out of sleep mode, I can do nothing.
Any suggestions will be most welcome.

at boot up press CTRL ALT F1, type in your username then password then use this
sudo mate-screensaver-preferences
then check under power management if the settings have put your computer to sleep prematurely.
you can use CTRL ALT F7 to exit the tty1.

EDIT:
You can also use this link to find errors in logs. http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/08/lin ... log-files/
/var/log/messages should be the file that you should check first.
gksu pluma /var/log/messages

Thanks for your advice, but this is really weird.......
Powered up connected to external monitor, and the mbd splash came up on both screens, followed by login screen.
Did CNRTL/ALT/F1, entered username & password, then "sudo mate-screensaver-preferences" at which point I got the message: "(mate-screensaver-preferences:1549) : GTK-warning:cannot open display"

Powered off, powered on, got to login screen, logged in OK.
Got to Power Options via Control Panel in Main Menu, nothing set which could cause early entry to sleep mode.
Went into Firefox, all normal. Disconnected external monitor, still OK. Shut down normally.

Powered up - blank screen. Powered off.
Powered up again doing CNRTL/ALT/F1, and the login text appeared so briefly, I didn't have time to enter anything, followed by blank screen. Tried again - same result.

Because things seemed to be going OK, I didn't look at any log files - maybe I should have done!
Will go back to the external monitor and try again.
Any thoughts on what happened will be welcome.

Latest update:
Reconnected to external screen - powered up & got mbd splash on both screens, but login page on ext. screen only.
Logged in succesfully.
There isn't a /var/log/messages - why?
FWIW this is today's activity taken from /var/log/auth.log, I really do hope it means something to someone!

Up to 16:14:24 I was not connected to the external screen. (It's my last try detailed in the previous post)
From 18:58:07 I was connected to the external screen.

I've just downloaded MInt 17 - if I could get a screen I'd instal it. Could it be done using the external screen????

"cannot determine display-device"
Thats seems to be your major problem. Searching the net revealed this to be bug affecting some users.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1019108
this seems to an answer to solve it though it's beyond my limited knowledge:

On a debian system this means that instead of including pam config "common-session" you'll have to include "common-session-noninteractive" where pam_ck_connector is not getting loaded at all.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49160

I would try using mint 17 live dvd/usb first and see if problem remains,I suspect this bug won't you affect you using since mint 17 is very different than mint 13.

Re: Can't get out of sleep mode
by norm.h on Mon Jun 02, 2014

I had noticed "cannot determine display-device" and wondered about its significance.
The suggested remedy for the bug is beyond me too, so I'll take your advice and try Mint 17 as you suggest.

Re: Can't get out of sleep mode
by norm.h on Tue Jun 03, 2014

Well upgrading to Mint 17 wasn't the solution.
After doing a clean install followed by configuring my setup, all was OK for several hours ....then for no apparent reason it crashed as I atttempted to change the clock format. A reboot only produced a blank screen.

This morning, I reconnected to the external screen and booted up OK.
Still no /var/log/messages so in desperation I changed pam config "common-session" to "common-session-noninteractive" as suggested above, disconnected the ext. screen and rebooted successfully.

It remains to be seen if this actually is the solution.

3 or 4 successful boots since my last post, so I'll mark this issue as solved.
If there are any more problems, I'll start a new thread because I think this thread title is now misleading. [/code]

FWIW: var/log/messages doesn't exist on either laptop
The default system logfile is /var/log/syslog. - /var/log/messages has been abandoned roundabout 2 years ago or 3? - /var/log/dmesg might be of interest, too, in particular with respect to hardware messages.

Thank you for that.
Normal boot failed again this morning - here is the sequence of events:

Power on - got mbd splash & Mint log (briefly), followed by an empty black screen.
Powered off & back on - got Mint log (briefly), followed by an empty black screen.
Shut down with REISO, disconneced mouse & powered on.
Got Mint logo (briefly) followed by empty black screen.
Did REISUB - got mbd splash & Mint log (briefly), followed by an empty black screen.
Cntrl/Alt/Del got the same result.

Powered off, connected to external screen, powered on and logged in successfully (both monitors).

Re: Boot failures in 13 persist in 17

Well I've just been all through the same rigmarole again.
It will only boot properly (today) if connected to an external screen.

Here is the var/log/auth.o log from my most recent boot, with external screen up & running.
I have since disconnected the ext. screen and am proceeding as normal.

I've been comparing the var/log/auth.0 files for the most recent boots of my 2 laptops.
There appears to be 2 lines missing from the eXplora's file. (In bold onr nSpire file)

Jun 12 11:21:00 normh-nspire gnome-keyring-daemon[1661]: couldn't set environment variable in session: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

I don't know if this is because of adding "common-session-noninteractive" to polkit.1 or even if it's significant.
Also, the "solution" is over 2 years old, and refers to polkit 0.105 and systemd 182, whereas my file is etc/pam.d/polkit 1.0 LINK

This problem still persists, despite yet another clean reinstall, and is getting progressively worse.
It always seems to come back to the dispay server, although yesterday evening, for no apparent reason, the wifi disconnected and we had to reboot to reconnect.

"Monitors" In the Control Panel shows as "Unknown".

inxi -G gives:
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RS690M [Radeon Xpress 1200/1250/1270]
X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: ati, radeon (unloaded: vesa) FAILED: fbdev Resolution: 1024x768@76.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.4, 128 bits) GLX Version: 2.1 Mesa 10.1.3

Where FAILED is shown in red.
Is this referring to the driver, the graphics chip, or something else?

Whenever I manage to login from the command line I can get started by running startx, which eventually tells me that x is already running.

This is in no way meant to be a critisism or sarcasm - merely an observation.
Given there have been 155 views of this thread, I'm surprised by the paucity of suggestions.
Can it really be that nobody has experienced the same or a similar issue, or had any ideas for resolving it?

Anyway, I seem to be geting somewhere at last.
I changed MDM to GDM, and so far, 4 of 5 boots have been 1st time successful, the other one needed a second boot.
Could it be that MDM was broken?
I may reinstall it to see what happens. What do other folk think?

I'm now left with a screen that is stretched horizontally, and Monitors in the Control Panel showing as "Unknown".
which I will have to follow up on, but at least I (she) can use it.

It's entirely possible that the graphics chipset on the notebook is going bad. I had a Toshiba that had a similar chipset (x1250 series) and was giving plenty of warning similar to what you're experiencing before it finally gave up the ghost and just flat failed.

Laptop was working saticfactorily using GDM - installed via Synaptic.

Then having read these two threads:

Boots Only to CLI After Installing LM17 <SOLVED>
Mint 17 MATE - not starting X successfully automatically

I decided to reinstall MDM - now version 1.6.9, again via Synaptic and which automatically removed GDM.
MDM wouldn't work for me - had to go back to GDM.

So could the difference (whether it works or not) be to do with particular graphics chips / cards?
MDM 1.6.9 works perfectly well on my other laptop - see OP for different graphics chips.
Mint 17 (Mate) 32 bit installed on both machines from the same DVD.

Edited to say that my tower machine, also with Min17 installed from the same DVD, with an nvidia GE Force 8400 card, and running MDM 1.6.9, is working perfectly well.

If as Biker suggests, my graphics chip is on it's way out, surely GDM wouldn't work properly either?

I'm having the same problem (my display adapter isn't bad)
I simply installed Linux Mint 17 Mate onto a USB 3.0 key.
I can barely get Linux Mint to boot up before it halts. I've tried it both in a USB 3 port and a USB 2 port. Linux Mint simply won't boot in Live mode with a Persistent State enabled. LinuxLive USB Creator

Re: Boot failures in 13 persist in 17 (Chapter 1) - SOLVED

Post by norm.h »

I'm sorry I can't help with this, but the issue is quite different from the issue I had.
My problem was a failure to boot an installed Linux.
Because of this, and also because this thread is marked "Solved", you're much more likely to get responses if you start a new topic for your problem.

Good Luck with it.
