LMDE 32 bit edition, up to date, recent re-install on an old lenovo thinkpad r61 w/ 3 gigs memory and 500 gig ssd
Steps to cause problem:
1. plug in a vga cable for 2nd monitor whil computer is asleep or has login screen up.
2. Login, no second monitor, so hit function-f7 to switch display modes. No luck.
3. reboot and log in to Cinnamon, Cinnamon 2d, or gnome fallback
4. get uh-oh cinnamon has suffered an error it cannot recover from message, which it took me two weeks to figure out could be dismissed with alt f4
attempted solutions:
* delete cinnamon settings (no)
* purge and reinstall cinnamon (no)
* dismiss uh-oh smokescreen and try to reset display: on apply, get message

* temporary solution:full reinstall, but problem recurs next time I plug in the vga cable before logging in.
