Firefox pixelated pictures

Hello!

Recetly, I've strated experienceing some issues with Firefox dsplaying pictures since they are pixelated. I've cleared the cache and it worked fine. But now, even clearing the cache does not solve the problem.
Anyone knows about this issue please?
(I'm using LM 17 64bit Cinnamon and Firefox 30)

I can't really explain it, but I've combined your screenshot with one I took and indeed I see a clear difference: http://i.imgur.com/I1s9l1K.png (top half is part of yours--blocky image, bottom half is part of mine--smooth image).

Is your display set at 24 or 32 bit color depth? I doubt this is it, but if it is set at a lower color depth that might cause such an effect.

I didn't change any color related settings. But how can I know what is the color depth am I using right now please ?

I'm not sure how else to do it, but this command works for me:

xwininfo -root | grep Depth

It may tell you that you need to install a package first to get the xwininfo command.

At my surprise, depth is set to 24 bit... Any possible way to set it to 32 please? (I'm using Fglrx and didn't find any option in catalyst for that, unless I'm missing something)

Mine is set at 24 also, and that is fine. That shouldn't be causing the issue. Can you try with a different browser? Like Chromium. Perhaps there is something in your browser settings that affects JPEG display quality for some reason.

Hm. And if you type this command in a terminal:

That downloads the file Strip-Rémi-Parmentier-650-finalenglish.jpg directly to your home folder. Open it with Image Viewer or GIMP, see if zoomed to 100% that looks any better. This completely avoids using your browser.

FWIW, with FF 24, I see the xenopeek image, with 24 bit display (32bit display = 24 bits + 8 bits transparency, so they should look the same).

The bad image looks like a low-quality (high compression) jpg image. If the downloaded image looks bad in gimp/whatever, try converting it to png or bmp and see what that looks like. If it's also happening with Chromium, perhaps reinstall the jpg rendering libs....but I'm not sure which those are.

Are you using proprietary display drivers or nouveau?

After downloading the picture, it doesn't look any better... Even after exporting it to png...

I'm using a proprietary driver for ATI: fglrx (the one available at Driver Manager)

You could decide on the color depth and whether or not it makes much if any difference to the image display..

• As of 2012 many modern desktop systems (Mac OS X, GNOME, KDE, Windows XP/Vista/7, etc...) offer an option for 24-bit truecolor with 8 bits for an alpha channel, which is referred to as "32-bit color" or the RGBA color space. Switching to an 8/16/24-bit color option in those systems generally disables transparency/translucency effects, and the only reduction in color depth is seen when going to 8/16-bit color.

And do image programs, such as Gimp show those images as also bad in viewing..
--I might check the image on a graphics program, some of which you will have installed as defaults: GThumb for example.

Yes, the graphic programs shows it the same bad way when I've doanloaded it like xenopeek showed me...

Even after changing the graphic card driver, the problem did not disappear fror Firefox nor Chromium... I'm not sure what the real problem is anymore... A software related one or more general problem...
