broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
there were some updates to Mint 17. When I clicked to install them, it said that it will uninstall a bunch of programs. These for the most part are not big programs. 1 I use daily, another a little less often, the others are just card/board games etc.
Basically, they of KDE origin.
knode - daily use
ktorrent - been using lately to download Linux ISOs
kate
kmahjongg
kreversi
and other games
I thought I could simply reinstall them, so thought no biggy. I was mistaken.
Software Manager says that the programs are not available and to use apt-get to install them. Synaptic Package Manager says "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first."
I tried searching for an answer, but could not find a straight answer. one result said to install and run "aptitude" instead of "get-apt", another gives instructions for Fedora. A couple of results gave instructions for Mint 6.
Can someone point me in the correct direction please? I can do without the games, but I need knode and ktorrent.

Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Hi, I had the same problem after the update. In my case was Okular, K3B and another one I don't remember now. It seems to do with all KDE packages:
I can't get any KDE based programs installed now.
Here is a couple of screenshots.

I'm using Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bits.
Thanks.

Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Hi guys
I don't run KDE, but....
I've just done a little checking on other forums.. so far there is no mention of this issue on the KDE forums yet, there is a topic about this over on the Kubuntu forums though, not a solution though at the time of writing. I know this doesn't help, but, it does at least show the issue affects other Ubuntu based KDE releases as well.
The link for the Kubuntu forum topic in case anyone posts anything useful later http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread ... -s-upgrade

Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Thanks for the link, WT.
from what i can see the problem is the update from 4.13 to 4.13.2 that is coming from trusty-updates.
the real solution has to come from ubuntu/kubuntu devs and finish the 4.13.2 upload (it shouldn't take long)

Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Seems to be OK now. I can now install all the updates and the system no longer wants to remove important packages.
Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Yes. Did apt-get update and now I can install everything fine.

Gonna be replying to a bunch in one go. So please bear with me.
Darn it. I didn't realise that k3b had also been removed. I agree, it's KDE programs alone.Hi, I had the same problem after the update. In my case was Okular, K3B and another one I don't remember now. It seems to do with all KDE packages:

I see this thread is linked in the kubuntu forums on this problem. If the KDE 4.13.2 is up and running, why can't I get them?? Do I need to do that apt-get update thingy which also doesn't work because I don't know if I'm doing the command wrong?apt policy knode ktorrent kate

Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Update.
I've now sorted it. The command for apt-get update was incomplete. Yes, it was meant to be sudo apt-get update. It's one of those pet hates where commands are only half mentioned.
Well, I can close this thread as solved now.
[Update again]
Sorry folks, I can't add [SOLVED] to the thread title, but this thread is now closed because the problem no longer exists until next time it happens.

The right method is to open the terminal and enterHappyLinux wrote:Do I need to do that apt-get update thingy which also doesn't work because I don't know if I'm doing the command wrong?
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
Re: broken packages after update unsintalled many programs
Be careful. The problem is a lot worse today. It wants to remove half of KDE.
