HP 1018 printer on Mint 17

Hello, I recently replaced XP with Mint 17 on my mother's ten year old Dell. I am experiencing difficulties getting her printer to work. Initially I tried to install the driver using native software. Mint detected the printer and installed it but would not print. Then I removed the native driver and used the driver I downloaded from HP. I started the install from terminal. It returned a warning "that the driver is NOT compatible with Mint 17" but it provided an option to continue with the installation. Once this installations was completed the driver was displayed on "system settings". But like the native driver I was not able to print.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

What driver did you get, since I think HPLIP still works for Mint 17x

Can you tell me how to find out. which site is the best to use?

I will have to get to my mum's machine tomorrow to carry out the driver download/install. As of now there are no drivers on my mother's machine so I can carry out a clean install when I get the opportunity.

If plugged into USB port you can run this in Terminal to discover how it's identified.
