Change refresh rate - Cinnamon

Post by 0ddity »

Recently installed LM 17 Cinnamon 64 bit on my laptop, a Dell Studio XPS. I want to increase the refresh rate, because whenever the screen moves (mouse, windows, video, etc) it's very blurry. I have the default linux drivers installed for the video card, an ATI 4670M. The current ATI drivers don't support my card, so I was hoping there is some other way to change the refresh rate (if that is the problem.) Google was no help, most of the results were years old, and it's not possible to search for "refresh rate" using this forum's search function.

when you are online with this Dell go to control center, driver manager and check if additional drivers are vailable.

Clicked on Driver Manager, it brought up a window with two buttons, "revert" and "apply changes" which are both greyed out. It also says "no proprietary drivers are in use" at the bottom, and besides min/max/close, there are no other options.

On laptops and/or LCD/LED panels, the screen refresh rate is at first limited by the display panel. Usually it is 60Hz at max resolution and highest color depth on most consumer products. However you can try to alter and optimize the automatic settings made by Xorg. Please post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I understand the limitations of LCD's, it's just nothing was this blurry during movement in Win 7. I don't remember what the refresh rate was in that, but I just assumed the blurriness was caused by a lower refresh rate. It looks kinda like an old school LCD with a really low response time.

Re: Change refresh rate - Cinnamon

Post by PatH57 »

just checked on Dell page the max resolution is 1920x1080@60.0hz (your lcd will not allow anything more)
so the problem is more driver related.
Open package manager and search for fglxr and install it (it's an alternative driver)

The full 3D-hardware accelerated rendering is heavier in Cinnamon/GnomeShell than in Windows 7. The rendering methods are different, too.

Okay some tweaking can be tested... You will have to create (root/sudo rights required) the following folder and file:

1/ create the folder /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
2/ in this new folder, create and edit the file devices.conf and paste this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Radeon"
	Driver "radeon"
	Option "SwapbuffersWait"	"off"
	Option "EXAVsync" "on"
	Option "EXAPixmaps" "on"
EndSection
Then logout of your X session (no need to reboot) and login again.

Edit: On LM17, fglrx (if ever working for this now unsupported GPU) will be worse than the open-source radeon driver.

Thanks for the suggestion. The package manager didn't show any results for fglrx so I'm installing it from terminal using

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev

don't forget

Code: Select all

sudo amdconfig --initial

or it will not install properly

I didn't do that, oops. Got a failed installation I think, because on restarting X Cinnamon failed to load and went into fallback mode. I purged fglrx and restarted X and I'm back to where I was. I then made the devices.conf as suggested, and restarted X. No difference that I can tell.

normal it is a driver issue and you need to find the one that will work for you.
retry the installation and don't forget to run the command before you reboot.

Re: Change refresh rate - Cinnamon

After installing fglrx again, before restarting X, I ran the "sudo amdconfig --initial" command and got "amdconfig: No supported adapters detected"

I then uninstalled fglrx again to avoid a repeat of last time.

then only choice left is the driver from ATI

carefull:

it works with my radeon card and with xorg 1.15.1 but I had some other problems

It is usually a very bad idea to downgrade such important parts of the OS since the distribution tools expect some requirements in software dependencies and kernel features to be respected, for coherence and sometimes for overall system health and security sake. Older fglrx drivers may also not be compatible with present day (supported) kernels.

Re: Change refresh rate - Cinnamon

Post by PatH57 »

off course it is a bad idea but when it does not work... and changing refresh rates won't damage a thing (thank god the lcd will just not display it, I hope)
I use a kernel 3.15 on mine but I don't expect anybody to try this, the ATI driver is a last resort kind of thing not trying to push anyone to use it.

You may try with

Code: Select all

   Option "EXAVsync" "off"
but usually, disabling VSync induces some screen tearing.

just to try, install mesa-utils form package manager.
and htop

run

Code: Select all

sudo htop
in one terminal
then run

Code: Select all

glxgears
in another terminal and see how it behaves
glxgear htop.png
Locked
